The latest film in the 28 series, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, premiered in theaters on January 16th. The series began in 2002 with 28 Days Later, which starred Cillian Murphy and is often considered the strongest film in the franchise. Now that The Bone Temple has been out for a few days, people are already wondering if there will be another sequel and what the future holds for the series.
The popular horror series, which began over 20 years ago, currently includes four films. It started with 28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle, and introduced a terrifying new virus that turns people into fast-moving, rage-filled creatures. The 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, featured Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne, and Imogen Poots. Danny Boyle returned to direct the third film, 28 Years Later, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodi Comer, and Ralph Fiennes, which took a noticeably different approach in tone compared to the earlier installments. The latest film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, continues the story directly from the previous one and stars Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell.
The Final Scene of the Film Perfectly Sets Up The Next Movie
Following directly after the events of 28 Years Later, The Bone Temple focuses on Spike (Alfie Williams) as he tries to get away from the dangerous and brutal cult led by Jimmy Crystal (O’Connell). At the same time, Dr. Ian Kelson (Fiennes) accidentally stumbles upon a potential cure for the rage virus. After shooting Samson, the original infected person, with a morphine dart, he finds the virus’s effects seem to be lessened, or even reversed.
The movie doesn’t have a post-credits scene, but the ending strongly hints at the next installment, which has been confirmed. Spike and Kelly escape a violent confrontation between Crystal and Dr. Kelson, fleeing into the countryside. The scene then shifts to a fortified house, protected from those infected with the rage virus. Inside, a father is teaching his daughter, who is revealed to be Jim (Cillian Murphy, returning from the original film). Hearing the sounds of Spike and Kelly being chased, Jim and his daughter prepare to help. As the pair race to rescue them, setting the stage for 28 Years Later 3—and bringing back the character who began the story.
What Can We Expect From A New 28 Years Later Film?

The movie will probably center around Dr. Kelson’s possible cure and what Jim has been doing for the past twenty years. It could also feature various types of zombies, illustrating how the virus has evolved differently in various parts of the world. Plus, we might see the return of cults that are obsessed with the 1980s.
So, it looks like the story isn’t over after all! The first two films felt like they were setting up a trilogy, but we weren’t sure if a third was actually happening. Good news though – Deadline reported last month that Sony is indeed moving forward with another sequel! Apparently, Danny Boyle is back to direct, which is fantastic, and Alex Garland – the writer behind all three films, including 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple – is already working on the script. Plus, Murphy, who was an executive producer on the previous two, is in talks to join the project too. No title yet, but I’m already excited to see where this story goes!
