Everything We Know About Andrew Garfield’s Cancelled Amazing Spider-Man Sequels (And If He’ll Come Back)

As a huge Spider-Man fan, I remember when it looked like Sony was going to create their own massive universe with the character! After the 2012 Amazing Spider-Man reboot did well, they immediately started planning sequels and spin-off movies. They were really going all-in! One of the coolest things they were developing was a Sinister Six movie, directed by Drew Goddard, that would have tied into things they hinted at in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It was all so exciting… but unfortunately, it just didn’t end up happening. Thankfully, things worked out with the MCU, but I always wonder what could have been with that Sony universe!

The second Amazing Spider-Man movie didn’t perform well with critics or at the box office—it earned $716.9 million, which was the lowest amount for any live-action Spider-Man film. As a result, planned sequels were cancelled and the character was rebooted within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, many fans still enjoy Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man, especially after his appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and often wonder about the cancelled sequels. Here’s an update on what was planned for The Amazing Spider-Man series.

What We Know About The Cancelled Amazing Spider-Man Sequels

Before The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was released, Sony was so optimistic about the series that they already planned sequels for 2016 and 2018. Those films never happened, but enough information exists to get an idea of what they would have been about. Following the tragic death of Gwen Stacy at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a third movie likely would have focused on Peter Parker dealing with his grief. Actor Denis Leary hinted that the plot would have involved Peter trying to find a way to bring back those he had lost.

I recently heard something really interesting about a potential storyline they considered for Spider-Man 3. Apparently, there was an idea floating around where Peter Parker could have used a special formula to bring back people who had died! Can you imagine? Not only would that have meant getting to see George Stacy again, but they were also thinking about bringing back Norman Osborn and even Peter’s dad, Richard Parker! It’s cool to think about, but it sounds like it never actually got written into a full script. Alex Kurtzman, one of the writers, said they never finalized that storyline, so it might have just been an idea they were playing with that could have changed anyway during the making of the movie.

Marc Webb, the director of The Amazing Spider-Man films, revealed the original plan was to connect the third movie with a spin-off film focusing on the Sinister Six villains. This involved bringing Norman Osborn, previously thought dead, back to life – preserving his head in a deleted post-credits scene – so he could become the Green Goblin and lead the villain team. Webb later expressed regret for planning so far ahead, implying the filmmakers weren’t happy with how those plans ultimately played out.

Because plans for The Amazing Spider-Man 4 were never fully developed, details about the movie are scarce. Before The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was released, Andrew Garfield mentioned his contract only covered three films, and director Marc Webb was already considering leaving after the third one. While Sony wanted to make a fourth movie, it seems they would have needed to find a new director and renegotiate Garfield’s contract. Information about the plot is limited, but a leak from the 2014 Sony hack suggested plans to bring Emma Stone back as Gwen Stacy, potentially transforming her into Carnage, inspired by the Ultimate Marvel comic books.

Will Andrew Garfield Return as Spider-Man?

Though Garfield’s Spider-Man movies were cancelled years ago, he returned to the role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which felt like a satisfying conclusion to his time as the character. While the movie itself received varied reviews, fans particularly enjoyed Garfield’s performance. The huge success of No Way Home led many to hope for another Spider-Man film starring Garfield, but unfortunately, that doesn’t seem likely to happen.

In October 2025, Andrew Garfield definitively said that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 isn’t going to happen, and he doesn’t think it ever will, ending speculation about a revival of that series. While many fans will be disappointed, it’s understandable. Tom Holland continues to star in a successful Spider-Man series, and just like Sam Raimi’s planned Spider-Man 4, another Amazing Spider-Man film would be enjoyable, but probably hard to fit into the existing Marvel Cinematic Universe without causing problems – a concern Raimi himself expressed about his sequel.

While a third Amazing Spider-Man movie is unlikely, there’s still a possibility Andrew Garfield could reprise his role as Spider-Man in upcoming Marvel films like Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars. These movies are expected to heavily feature the multiverse, which would allow for many cameo appearances and character returns. Garfield has mentioned he’d only be interested in revisiting the role if it was for a truly creative and unusual project – something that would make his performance stand out, rather than just being a predictable fan moment.

It’s still uncertain whether Andrew Garfield will reprise his role as Spider-Man in the upcoming Secret Wars movie. While his inclusion could be unusual considering the film’s complex multiverse storyline, Marvel has a lot to juggle with so many characters and plotlines. The story might not allow for a meaningful role for Garfield’s Spider-Man, and a small or unsatisfying appearance would be more frustrating than not seeing him at all. Perhaps No Way Home was the perfect ending for his version of Peter Parker, offering a strong and memorable conclusion to his story.
