A new Star Wars game, called Fate of the Old Republic, has been officially revealed. It’s being created by Casey Hudson, who previously directed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and worked at BioWare. While the game is very early in development and likely years from release, a trailer has been shown featuring a mysterious Jedi character.
The trailer is mostly about setting a feeling and doesn’t reveal much about the story yet. Its visuals are clearly inspired by the original Knights of the Old Republic games, especially the ship the Jedi character travels on, which resembles the iconic Ebon Hawk, though it’s not the same vessel. This has sparked speculation that the Jedi could be Bastila Shan, a character from the original KotOR story that’s considered official canon. However, it’s still unclear if this is actually her, and we need to consider what we already know about the Old Republic era within the current canon.
Star Wars’ Old Republic Era Explained

Obi-Wan Kenobi first spoke of the Old Republic in the original Star Wars film, describing it as a time when the Jedi were at their peak. He explained to Luke that the Jedi had maintained peace and justice for over a thousand years during that era. While the prequel films initially made the Old Republic’s timeline a bit unclear, current Star Wars stories have clarified that it actually spans a very long period of history.
The Old Republic spanned 25,000 years, beginning with the Republic’s founding and ending a thousand years before the events of the Skywalker saga. The final 4,000 years were filled with growing conflict, starting when a division among the Jedi led to the creation of the Sith. These original Sith were Jedi who turned to the dark side and were banished, eventually finding their home on the planet Moraband (also known as Korriban). They waited for the right moment, then emerged roughly 3,000 years ago and built empires that challenged the Republic. Though they nearly destroyed it, the Sith were ultimately defeated by internal struggles.
The Old Republic Is Typically Associated With One Particular Sith (& Jedi)

The original Knights of the Old Republic games center around Revan, a celebrated hero from the Mandalorian Wars. After discovering a rising Sith power, Revan fell to the dark side and became a powerful Sith warrior, influenced by the Sith Emperor. Revan’s journey shares similarities with Anakin Skywalker’s, but focuses on a unique path to redemption. After the Jedi erased Revan’s memories, he eventually recovered them and found salvation through his love for fellow Jedi Bastila Shan, whom he later married.
Although the game Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR) is no longer considered official Star Wars canon (it’s now labeled “Legends”), the character Darth Revan has appeared in current canon material a few times. A key reference was in the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary, which explained that Palpatine’s Sith Eternal army included soldiers named after powerful Sith Lords from the past, including Revan. While other characters from KotOR have been mentioned, Bastila Shan hasn’t been officially reintroduced to canon yet. Considering Revan’s central role in KotOR, many fans have speculated that the Jedi featured in the upcoming Fate of the Old Republic video game might be Bastila.
The “Fate of the Old Republic” Sounds a Lot More Final

The game’s title, Fate of the Old Republic, suggests this story takes place near the very end of that era – a dark time when the Sith nearly wiped out the Jedi. The Jedi’s strength lay in their unity, while the Sith were often hampered by internal conflict. This mirrors the old Expanded Universe, where the Sith were weakened by infighting, and Darth Bane ultimately brought about their downfall. If the Sith are finally defeated in this game, it could lead to the Republic we see in the prequel movies.
Similar events have occurred in official Star Wars stories, though with slight variations. Evidence suggests Darth Bane played a larger role in the official timeline than previously known, taking over and reshaping the Sith Empire with his “Rule of Two” before ultimately being defeated by the Jedi. If this is true, the fate of the Old Republic was likely sealed when Bane fell, allowing the Republic to recover. This could be the central storyline of the game, rather than focusing on Bastila Shan.
