Some quotes from the “Star Wars” movies have become synonymous with the films and are deeply ingrained in pop culture. Quotes like Princess Leia’s “Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope,” or Darth Vader’s revelation “No, I am your father,” instantly evoke their origins. Similarly, Admiral Ackbar’s exclamation “It’s a trap!” from “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi” is one of the most frequently referenced moments across the entire nine-film series, having gained widespread recognition.
Actually, Admiral Ackbar wasn’t the first character in the Star Wars universe to utter this phrase. In a recent episode 2 of the Star Wars: Rebels podcast titled Pod of Rebellion, host Jon Lee Brody revealed the true source of this famous quote.
Ezra Bridger Was a Trendsetter Years Before Return of the Jedi
The Pod of Rebellion” is a fresh podcast, where Vanessa Marshall (Hera Syndulla’s voice actress), Tiya Sircar (Sabine Wren’s voice actress), Taylor Gray (Ezra Bridger’s voice actor), and Jon Lee Brody convene. Each episode corresponds to an individual episode of “Star Wars: Rebels,” with the voice talents discussing exclusive behind-the-scenes tales from their journey creating the series. In the most recent episode of “Pod of Rebellion,” Brody alludes to the “Rebels” episode with the same title and highlights its notable points.
In this scene, Ezra utters a line that reminds Ghost’s crew of a famous warning. He says, “This is a dangerous situation.” If you’re familiar with Star Wars lore, this phrase is often associated with Admiral Ackbar from Return of the Jedi, although Princess Leia also used it a couple of times in The Empire Strikes Back. However, chronologically speaking, Ezra Bridger was actually the first character to say, “It’s a trap,” before either Leia or Ackbar.
In “Spark of Rebellion: Part 2,” as a devoted Star Wars: Rebels fan, I found myself immersed in an episode where our fearless Ghost crew discovers an Imperial vessel transporting Wookiee prisoners, destined for slavery. This news struck a chord with Kanan, who, like some of these captives, had fought bravely during the Clone Wars, a conflict that marked him deeply as a young padawan. With a heart full of compassion, Kanan devised a daring plan to infiltrate the Imperial ship alongside Sabine and Zeb, with the aim of liberating the Wookiees. Unfortunately, things didn’t go smoothly when Agent Alexsandr Kallus and his squad of Stormtroopers showed up unexpectedly on board. Kallus was no mere passerby; he was there to nab the rebels, a mission he pursued relentlessly.
When Hera and Ezra, who were onboard the Ghost preparing for a getaway, spot Kallus’ vessel, they must act swiftly to alert their companions. With a sense of responsibility, Ezra decides to infiltrate the Imperial ship, search for his fellow crew members, and inform them about Kallus’ carefully devised plot.
Ezra shouts, “Watch out! This isn’t a mission, it’s a setup! We need to leave now!” He manages to warn Kanan and Zeb before they walk into a line of Stormtroopers.
Without a doubt, Ezra Bridger stands among the most significant Jedi figures in the Star Wars universe, and his importance has been further underscored by his being the first to utter a timeless phrase – not just once, but on three separate occasions – all this well before Admiral Ackbar made it famous.

Actor Taylor Gray, who played Ezra in “Rebels”, recently spoke about a specific event on the “Pod of Rebellion” podcast and playfully urged Ashley Eckstein (voice actress of Ahsoka Tano) to create a t-shirt with the phrase “Ezra did it first”. Ashley Eckstein is the founder of fashion brand Her Universe, known for its Star Wars merchandise. While Her Universe already offers some items inspired by Ezra, adding “Ezra did it first” as a design would definitely make for an entertaining addition to their collection.
