Emmerdale’s big crossover episode with Coronation Street – Corriedale – finally airs tomorrow.
Okay, so this is pretty big news for soap opera fans like me! For the very first time, characters from different shows are going to cross over – and it’s happening because of a huge car crash! Apparently, a massive pile-up is going to bring people from all these different fictional towns together in the aftermath. It’s a really interesting way to connect these worlds and I’m super curious to see how it plays out.
If you’re a dedicated Coronation Street viewer but haven’t seen Emmerdale, you might find it a bit confusing to figure out the characters and the storyline at first.
Luckily, we’ve got you covered with a guide to everything you need to know.
John Sugden’s reign of terror

In August 2024, Victoria Sugden discovered a surprising family secret: she has an older half-brother named John. He was conceived when her father, Jack, had an affair with a teacher named Barbara back in the late 1980s.
He quickly revealed himself to be a complicated person with a need to be seen as a hero. He would deliberately create risky situations to make himself appear more virtuous. He’s responsible for two deaths, including Nate, the son of Cain Dingle.
John developed feelings for Aaron Dingle, who had previously been married to Robert, John’s half-brother who was in prison.

On John and Aaron’s wedding day, Robert unexpectedly reappeared and confessed he was still in love with Aaron. In a disturbed act, he kidnapped Aaron and threw him off a cliff, believing they were meant to be together.
He subsequently went on the run, but has returned over the Christmas period to seek revenge.

Both Robert and Aaron were threatened with a gun. Aaron figured out the only way to stop John was to act like he agreed to run away with him.
Charity Dingle’s baby nightmare

Charity Dingle, a long-running character on the soap, is fiercely devoted to her granddaughter, Sarah Sugden. Sarah has a serious condition called Fanconi anaemia, which weakens her body and makes her more likely to get cancer.
Maya wanted to start a family with her husband, Jacob Gallagher, but discovered she had early-stage cervical cancer during IVF treatment, requiring a hysterectomy. Unable to carry a child herself, she was incredibly grateful when her friend Charity offered to be a surrogate and carry a baby for them.
Okay, so things got complicated for Charity. While dealing with all that drama with her husband, Mackenzie, she ended up reconnecting with an old flame, Ross, and, well, a pregnancy resulted. It was a messy situation, to say the least, and definitely upped the stakes on the show.

She’d been secretly holding onto this information for months, but on New Year’s Day, Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick), after having too much to drink, accidentally revealed the truth to Mack.
He’s racing to find Sarah and Jacob before their honeymoon so he can tell them about Charity’s actions.
Ray Walters and Celia Daniels’s criminal masterplan exposed

This year, teenagers April Windsor, played by Amelia Flanagan, and Dylan Penders, played by Fred Kettle, have been taken advantage of by the new residents, Ray Walters (Joe Absolom) and Celia Daniels (Jaye Griffiths).
A mother and son were running a drug operation in Yorkshire, and they involved young people in their criminal activity. They then forced April into prostitution, but when she resisted, she attacked a client with a vodka bottle, injuring them.
Ray tricked her into thinking she was responsible for a man’s death, and has been using that to blackmail her and her father, Marlon, for months. When they considered going to the police, Celia told Ray to deliberately hit Dylan with his car.

After waking up from a coma, Dylan shared with April a disturbing revelation: Celia and Ray were making people, including Bear Wolf – Paddy Dingle’s father – work against their will on their farm.
Ray has been seeing Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy), who doesn’t know about his true nature. He killed Celia, who was controlling, because he wanted to be with Laurel and believed it was the only way they could stay together in the village.
In the moments before, she’d told him that she’d killed Bear.
Unfortunately, by the time Ray went to tell Laurel he wasn’t going to leave, Dylan had already shared all the details with her.
Corriedale airs on ITV1 and ITVX at 8pm on Monday, 5th January.
