EXCLUSIVE: Fallout 3 is getting a remaster after all, and New Vegas is, too — but that’s not what the TV show’s countdown timer is for

As we reach the midpoint of Fallout’s second season on TV, the show is once again sparking a surge in popularity for the video games it’s based on – just like it did when the first season premiered last year.

A countdown timer on the official website for the show has led fans to believe that Bethesda will soon announce a remastered or remade version of Fallout 3, possibly even releasing it unexpectedly.

However, according to exclusive reporting by Windows Central’s Jez Corden, based on a broader look at Xbox’s plans for 2026 and the future, this won’t happen. While our sources confirmed this, it’s still unknown what the purpose of the countdown timer is.

However, our sources confirmed that both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are planned for a remaster or remake. These releases are expected to follow a similar model to the recently remastered The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, which was a surprise hit for Microsoft and Xbox, exceeding their sales expectations.

There’s been speculation that a countdown on the Fallout TV show’s Amazon page might mean a surprise release of a new Fallout game or an updated version of an older one. But according to sources, that’s not what’s happening. Instead, we’ll eventually see a complete remake of Fallout 3, similar to the updated version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and a remastered version of Fallout: New Vegas as well.

Beyond the confirmation that remastered versions of the Fallout games are in development, very little information is available. However, recent news indicates they’ll likely follow a similar approach to the Oblivion Remastered release. This suggests a significant graphical upgrade using Unreal Engine 5, while the core gameplay will still be built on the Gamebryo engine – the foundation of Bethesda’s older Creation Engine.

It’s still unknown who will remaster these games and with what technology. Because both games originally used the Gamebryo Engine, it’s possible they could be released together as a bundle – something the popular ‘Tale of Two Wastelands’ mod already does – but this is just a guess.

We’ve learned that Obsidian Entertainment, known for games like Avowed, Grounded 2, The Outer Worlds 2, and the classic Fallout: New Vegas, is currently working on four new games, ranging in size and scope. With Tim Cain – a key figure from the original Fallout – recently joining the team, many are speculating whether Obsidian might be involved in remastering older titles.

We’ll have to wait for an official announcement to know all the details, unless we hear something credible beforehand. However, it’s great news that Fallout 3 and New Vegas are potentially getting updated for modern systems – fans have been requesting this for a long time!

As a huge Fallout fan, I’m really excited about these remasters for more than just how good they’ll *look*. Getting Fallout 3 and New Vegas to run smoothly on today’s computers can be a real headache – thankfully, the Viva New Vegas project helps a lot with that! So, it’s awesome that these new versions are being built specifically for modern systems. It means we can finally enjoy these classic games without all the technical frustrations!

As a researcher, I’ve been exploring the accessibility of the Fallout series, and it’s great news that all the games are currently available on both Xbox and PC through Xbox Game Pass. I should note that the classic, old-school computer role-playing games in the series are only playable on PC through the service.

Would you be interested in seeing remastered versions of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas? If so, would you prefer the remasters focus on improved graphics, similar to what was done with Oblivion, or would you like to see changes to the gameplay as well? Share your thoughts in the comments!
