EXILED TO INDOCTRINATION: Garantex Founder’s Indian Vacation Cut Short by US Extradition

As the sun sets over the Indian subcontinent, a Lithuanian national’s vacation has been reduced to a mere memory, courtesy of the long arm of US justice. Aleksej Bešciokov, allegedly the founder of the cryptocurrency exchange Garantex, has been apprehended by Indian authorities, who, with the help of national police, have effectively ended his Indian sojourn. It appears that his plans to depart the country were not as well-laid as one might have hoped.

Bešciokov’s arrest is a result of a coordinated effort between Indian and international authorities, who have been tracking the alleged Garantex founder for quite some time. The US has charged him with conspiracy to commit money laundering, conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money-transmitting business, and conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. It seems that Bešciokov’s alleged activities have finally caught up with him, and he will soon be facing the music in the United States.

According to the indictment filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Bešciokov, along with others, operated Garantex to launder the proceeds of various illicit activities, including ransomware, computer hacking, narcotics transactions, and sanctions violations. It appears that Bešciokov’s alleged scheme was a lucrative one, with the group profiting from the laundering of illicit funds between 2019 and the present.

The alleged Garantex founder’s arrest follows a series of events, including Tether’s freezing of $27 million worth of USDt (USDT) on the platform and the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control adding Garantex to its list of sanctioned entities in April 2022. The European Union also imposed sanctions against the platform in February as part of sanctions on “Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.”

The question remains: will Bešciokov’s legal team be able to delay his return to the United States? Only time will tell. After all, as the great Russian philosopher once said, “The line between order and chaos is not always clearly defined.” Perhaps Bešciokov’s case will serve as a reminder that justice, much like the Indian subcontinent, can be unpredictable and unforgiving.

Serda, a Russian national and Garantex’s co-founder and chief commercial officer, remains at large, leaving one to wonder if he will eventually follow in Bešciokov’s footsteps. Only time will tell.

As the world watches, the question on everyone’s mind is: will Bešciokov’s extradition be a smooth one, or will he be able to delay his return to the United States? Only the courts will decide.

The alleged Garantex founder’s arrest is a reminder that, no matter where you are in the world, the long arm of justice can reach out and snatch you at any moment. So, the next time you’re planning a vacation, remember: you’re never truly free from the law.

And so, the drama continues. Stay tuned, folks!
