As a gamer, I’m really excited about Exodus. The game director, Chris King, has already said they took inspiration from games like Mass Effect, but the narrative director, Drew Karpyshyn – who actually wrote for Mass Effect – recently told GamesRadar that a lot of players are craving that kind of RPG again. He mentioned that everyone at Archetype Entertainment, the studio making Exodus, are big fans of those BioWare-style games, and honestly, expectations are pretty high – as they should be!
Karpyshyn explained that there’s a strong demand for games like theirs. As fans themselves, the team understands what players want and believes there’s a real appetite for a new, high-quality title. However, he admitted this creates significant pressure, as fans have high expectations and the team is dedicated to delivering a game that meets them.
He explained it was a fantastic opportunity, but they had to meet very high expectations. That’s part of what makes game development so challenging – each new game needs to be better than the amazing ones that already exist, pushing the boundaries to reach a new standard.
King shared his opinion on today’s gaming scene, saying he’s found it rather dull except for a few games. He specifically mentioned Blue Prince, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and Ghost of Yōtei, and explained that he’s looking for games that are innovative and exciting.
I’ve been playing games for a long time, and honestly, I’m starting to feel a bit bored with what’s out there,” said King. “A lot of the series I used to love aren’t as exciting anymore. If you look at the games I’ve played recently – like Blue Prince, Clair Obscur, and Ghost of Yōtei – I’m really searching for something new and unexpected. I hope other players feel the same way. We’re creating a sci-fi, open-world RPG that we think offers a really unique experience, and I’m hoping people will give it a try and discover something different.
So, the dev King was talking about what inspired Exodus, and it sounds awesome! He said Mass Effect really influenced the overall story and how choices you make in one game will matter later on. And he also mentioned Horizon – apparently, we can expect a similar combat system to that game, which is great news because I really enjoyed that!
According to King, Mass Effect is a frequent point of comparison for their work. He noted shared elements like grand, space-based storytelling and significant choices that impact the entire game series. They’ve also looked at combat systems in Mass Effect and Horizon for inspiration.
As a gamer, I really dig what Archetype Entertainment is doing. One of the studio heads, Chad Robertson, was talking about how much they’ve been inspired by the combat in the Horizon games. He explained it’s all about figuring out how enemies are built and then using the right tools to take them down. Basically, you can’t just button-mash – you need to think strategically about what you’re using and why. They’ve taken that idea and are building something cool with it in their own game, and I’m excited to see how it plays out!
Exodus is being developed for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and is slated for a 2027 launch.
