Expedition 33 Breaks The Game Awards Record for Most Gongs in a Single Show

It felt almost certain that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 would break records at The Game Awards last night, and it did – winning nine of the show’s signature statues, presented by host Geoff Keighley.

Man, this game absolutely swept the awards! It won pretty much everything it was up for, except for Best Audio Design. That one deservedly went to Battlefield 6 – their sound design was incredible. Though, honestly, ARC Raiders or even the new Silent Hill could have been contenders too!

The Best Performance category was largely an internal competition, with Jennifer English winning for her role as Maelle. Ben Starr as Verso and Charlie Cox as Gustave were also nominated, but English ultimately took the prize.

Here’s all nine awards French dev Sandfall Interactive won on the night:

  • Game of the Year: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
  • Best Game Direction: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
  • Best Narrative: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
  • Best Art Direction: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
  • Best Score and Music: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
  • Best Performance: Jennifer English (Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33)
  • Best Independent Game: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
  • Best Role Playing Game: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
  • Best Debut Indie Game: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

As previously noted, this is a new record for The Game Awards, surpassing the previous record of seven wins held by The Last of Us: Part 2.

Honestly, being labeled an indie game really helped Expedition 33 out, even though it was published by Kepler Interactive. It let us snag both Best Indie Game and Best Debut Indie Game awards – awards the new Naughty Dog survival horror game wasn’t even up for, which is pretty cool.

It’s still up for debate what exactly defines an “indie” game, but regardless, Expedition 33’s successes are undeniable.

We thought many games were excellent in 2025, but Sandfall Interactive’s turn-based RPG really stood out and captured everyone’s attention.

We believe the team truly deserves all the success it’s achieved, and as a bonus, they’ve just released a free update for everyone!
