An updated version of the sci-fi sequel is now available on HBO Max. This “Assembly Cut” includes extra footage and changes to the original film by David Fincher, offering a longer and revised viewing experience.
David Fincher’s Alien 3: The Assembly Cut now streaming on HBO Max
HBO Max now features Alien 3: The Assembly Cut, a different version of David Fincher’s 1992 Alien film. This version, which is quite different from the original release, has become popular with fans over the years and is now available for streaming.
The Assembly Cut of the film is about 144 minutes long, significantly longer than the 114-minute version shown in theaters. This extended cut includes added scenes, longer versions of existing scenes, and more background information to help viewers understand the story. Supporting characters also get more screen time. Several scenes have been altered, such as one where the prisoners temporarily hold the alien before it breaks free. Notably, the ending doesn’t include the chest-burster scene that was added later in the theatrical release.
This isn’t a director’s cut in the usual sense. When the studio planned a special home video release, director David Fincher decided not to be involved. Instead, the ‘Assembly Cut’ was created separately and first appeared in 2003 as part of the ‘Alien Quadrilogy’ DVD set. It’s now considered a different version of the film that provides a more complete story.
Sigourney Weaver returns as Ellen Ripley in this Alien film. The story takes place on a distant prison planet where Ripley must face a new alien danger, but this time she has no weapons or advanced technology to help her.
This version of the film joins previously released alternate cuts on the platform, like the Director’s Cut of Aliens and the Special Edition of Alien Resurrection.
