After a two-year wait since the second movie appeared on Netflix, significant news about Extraction 3 has just been announced.
As a huge fan of the Extraction films, I was excited to read on What’s On Netflix that they’re planning to start shooting Extraction 3 in June 2026, with filming wrapping up around October 9th. What’s really interesting is they’re switching things up location-wise! The first two movies were shot in places like Thailand, India, and Prague, but this time they’re setting up base in Sydney, Australia. They’ve also mentioned they’ll be doing some additional filming in Europe, but they’re keeping those specific spots a secret for now.

Originally, the filmmakers planned to shoot Extraction 2 in Sydney, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to change course.
San Hargrave, a veteran stunt coordinator with two decades of experience on popular films and TV shows like Dexter, Conan the Barbarian, the Hunger Games trilogy, Suicide Squad, and Deadpool 2, directed the first two Extraction movies and is set to direct the third.
Joe and Anthony Russo are producing the project, with Joe also writing the scripts. They previously collaborated with the director on several Marvel blockbusters, including Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Mike Larocca, Eric Gitter, Angela Russo-Otstot, and Peter Schwerin are also producers on the film.
The graphic novel Ciudad, created by the Russo Brothers and Ande Parks, served as the inspiration for Extraction. The film follows Tyler Rake, played by Chris Hemsworth, a former Australian special forces operative who undertakes a perilous mission to rescue the son of a powerful criminal. However, unforeseen challenges emerge, jeopardizing his attempt.
The movie received generally favorable reviews, scoring 67% on Rotten Tomatoes based on critic reviews and 71% based on audience feedback.
In Extraction 2, Rake takes on a dangerous rescue mission with personal stakes – he’s trying to free his ex-wife’s family from captivity. The film has been well-received by critics, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an 80% approval score. Audiences seem to love it even more, giving it an 84% rating.
Idris Elba, Golshifteh Farahani, and Olga Kurylenko—all of whom appeared alongside Chris Hemsworth in Extraction 2—are expected to return for the next film, according to director Sam Hargrave. While Netflix hasn’t officially announced the cast, plans are also in development to grow the Extraction universe with a spin-off movie called Tygo and an eight-episode TV series, Mercenary: An Extraction Series.
Chris Hemsworth is most famous for his role as Thor in the Marvel movies. He’s also appeared in a variety of other films, including Star Trek, The Cabin in the Woods, Snow White and the Huntsman, the 2016 version of Ghostbusters, Men in Black: International, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and his new movie, Crime 101.
A release date for Extraction 3 hasn’t been announced.
