Fairy Tail Creator Returns With a Brand New Seinen Series

Hiro Mashima, known for creating popular shonen series such as Fairy Tail, Rave Master, and Eden’s Zero, is stepping into uncharted waters with his new project, a one-shot titled 1993. Although Fairy Tail remains Mashima’s most recognized work, it has been embroiled in controversy due to its frequent use of fan service. The original Fairy Tail manga ended in 2017, followed by the release of a sequel, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, which is still being published. The anime adaptation of the original Fairy Tail series was produced by A-1 Pictures, CloverWorks, and Bridge studios and concluded in 2019. J.C. Staff took over the sequel in 2024, airing 25 episodes up until January 2025.

In an exciting shift from his usual creative realm, the esteemed manga artist is venturing beyond his comfort zone to introduce a new standalone piece titled “1993“, a narrative that delves into the raw, edgy milieu of delinquent adolescence – a stark contrast to the fantastical worlds he typically explores. This captivating one-shot is slated for publication in the prestigious Weekly Young Magazine, a renowned seinen journal, as part of its 45th anniversary celebrations. The one-shot will grace the pages of issue #32, set to be released on July 7, 2025.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that after more than two decades of mastering the Shonen genre, Hiro Mashima is venturing into uncharted territory with a one-shot work! This unexpected move is making waves in the manga community, especially since we’ve never seen Mashima delve into a story outside his comfort zone.

Interestingly, this new work isn’t part of a serialized manga, and details about it are scarce, except for its theme – which remains undisclosed. This upcoming piece is set to grace the hallowed pages of Weekly Young Magazine, a legendary publication that has been home to timeless classics like Ghost in the Shell and Prison School since 1980.

While we don’t have official confirmation yet, the news about Mashima’s new work is reliable, so there’s little room for speculation or misinformation. The title itself stirs a wave of curiosity and nostalgia, as it offers a glimpse into uncharted territories in Mashima’s creative journey. Here’s to hoping this delinquent tale lives up to our expectations!

Delinquent stories, whether Shonen or Seinen, have long been popular in Japan, with titles like “Crows,” “Good-For-Nothing Blues,” and “Bad Boys” being well known. However, it wasn’t until more recently that this genre started gaining a broad international audience. Series such as “Tokyo Revengers” and “Wind Breaker” have become globally recognized over time. Given the involvement of Mashima in this unique event, the project could prove to be quite enjoyable.
