Tim Cain, a well-known game designer, is coming out of semi-retirement to rejoin Obsidian Entertainment, a role-playing game studio owned by Xbox Game Studios. He announced on Friday, through his YouTube channel, that he’s already been back working with the team for a little while. Cain is currently involved in a new, unannounced project, and he playfully suggests fans won’t be able to guess what it is. He also plans to continue sharing stories and insights from his long career on his personal YouTube channel as long as he has interesting things to share. You can watch his full announcement video below.

Throughout his career, Cain has contributed to many well-known games. He started at Interplay, working on the original Fallout and Fallout 2, and later co-founded Troika Games, where he helped create beloved titles like Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magic Obscura and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. He later joined Obsidian Entertainment in 2011, playing a key role in games like Pillars of Eternity and co-directing The Outer Worlds. Though he briefly retired in June 2020, he continued to collaborate with Obsidian as a contractor on The Outer Worlds 2, which was released in October 2025.

So…what could he be working on?

I have a lot of respect for Todd Howard’s attempt to keep everyone guessing about his next project, but naturally, I’m going to speculate anyway! While most people are immediately thinking Fallout, I actually suspect it’s something completely fresh. The bigger mystery for me is what could have been exciting enough to bring Howard back to the studio. Whatever it is, I’m really looking forward to finding out more. His work has touched so many different types of RPGs and has been instrumental in creating some truly iconic games.
