With the increasing excitement for Fallout season 2, many fans are wondering if the creators of the Amazon Prime Video series will need to choose a definitive ending for the 2010 video game, Fallout: New Vegas.
The games and the TV series share a single, consistent timeline. For the first time, the show’s main characters will be visiting a place that players have already experienced and significantly impacted in the games.
Because Fallout: New Vegas lets you side with various groups, each player’s experience and the story’s outcome can be quite unique.
With the premiere of Fallout season 2 approaching, we asked one of the show’s producers, Jonathan Nolan, about a popular rumor: did the creators have to choose an official ending to the Fallout game to guide the show’s story?
Actually, it didn’t happen that way,” Nolan explained. “I think it’s one of the best concepts Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Graham Wagner, and the whole team developed for the second season…
That game, more than any other in the series, really revolves around the different sides you can choose and how your decisions affect the outcome. Having lived a while, I’ve realized there aren’t any truly final endings in life, and that holds true for this game as well.

Groups and power structures constantly shift and change, and that’s reflected in our vision for the world of Vegas 10 to 15 years after the original game. Each faction believes they ultimately achieved victory, which is a realistic approach – in the real world, conflicts rarely have clear-cut endings or perfect resolutions.
The core message of the Fallout series, to me, isn’t about a world ending. It’s about new societies and ways of life emerging after the apocalypse. While it’s set in a post-apocalyptic world, the story really focuses on the birth of new beginnings.
We wanted to capture the feeling of starting something completely fresh, and we really tried to bring that spirit to Fallout: New Vegas. It was made with genuine care and respect for the original game, and we hope players will feel that passion when they watch the series.
