2025 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for Fox’s animated shows. Several series have been renewed for four more seasons, and American Dad is returning to its original network. Plus, after years of speculation, a sequel to The Simpsons Movie is finally happening! Now, Family Guy fans have something to look forward to this Halloween with a new special called A Little Fright Music. It’s a great time to be a fan of these shows. (Sadly, we’ve said goodbye to The Great North.)
I recently watched Stewie and Brian on *Family Guy* debate what songs are best for Halloween – I won’t give away what they decided! – and I spoke with co-showrunner Alec Sulkin about doing another holiday episode. First, though, I asked him about the news regarding a potential *Simpsons Movie* sequel, and he seemed just as excited about it as I was, telling me:
I really enjoyed the first Simpsons Movie and I’m a lifelong fan of The Simpsons, so I’m very excited about the new one. It’s always great when a movie you’re looking forward to comes out, and this is definitely one of those times.
As a movie fan, I’m telling you, it’s getting seriously rare to see a straight-up comedy in theaters these days. Remember when *The Simpsons Movie* came out? That feels like ages ago! Now, Taylor Swift – who was just starting out back in 2007 – can pack theaters with a concert film and even beat out regular movies at the box office, and she’s done it more than once this year! Okay, enough about Taylor for now, though I have a feeling the writers are already brainstorming how to get her a cameo.
Sulkin continued, adding praise for just how funny he thought the first movie was:
That show is really funny, so I thought the first movie did a great job of capturing that same feel – like an extended episode, packed with jokes. They clearly had a talented team behind it, and I’m excited about the new one.
Most people seem happy with the news, although some initial reactions were negative. We don’t need to focus on those negative responses right now.
Many people online were more confused about why another *Simpsons* movie was being made when we still haven’t gotten a full-length *Family Guy* movie – not just one that was based on *Star Wars*.
What’s Happening With The Family Guy Movie?
I asked one of the show’s creators if he knew fans were really hoping for a movie set in Quahog, and he responded by saying:
I’m aware of Seth’s plans for the Family Guy movie. He’s mentioned wanting to release it at the perfect moment, which I think is smart. He’s probably holding off announcing details because once he does, people will immediately start asking about a sequel, and he wants to avoid that pressure for as long as possible.
It’s surprising to think Seth MacFarlane is delaying a first film because he’s worried about the expectations for a potential sequel. But that’s probably how creators at his level have to plan things. He’s seen this happen before, especially considering it’s been 18 years since *The Simpsons Movie* came out. Perhaps when he has less on his plate, he’ll be ready to commit to making a movie for theaters.
I jokingly suggested that if both movies came out around the same time, the creator of *Family Guy* could arrange for it to play in theaters an hour after the *Simpsons* sequel. Sulkin then responded with:
[Laughs.] That’s very funny. He’d want it to be an hour before, I’m sure.
Imagine a huge movie event bringing together the worlds of *Family Guy*, *The Simpsons*, *Bob’s Burgers*, and *American Dad*! It would be amazing to also include the crude but lovable bear from *Ted* and the characters from *The Orville*. If you’re going to create a crossover like that, why not go all out and include everyone?
