The latest season of Family Guy included an episode that strongly echoed one from 2006, almost like a continuation of that earlier story. However, a similar episode in 2026 didn’t connect to it, either by accident or on purpose. This disconnect doesn’t quite add up, but there are some possible explanations. It’s not a perfect fit, but it’s consistent with Family Guy‘s typically unpredictable and rambling storytelling.
Since its debut in 1999, Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy has remained on the air, even after a short cancellation and revival in the early 2000s. Though it’s not as much of a cultural phenomenon as it once was, the show still attracts a dedicated audience who enjoy its outrageous humor and quick, unexpected cutaway jokes. Most viewers don’t focus on the show’s overall storyline, and some details are deliberately left open to interpretation. However, inconsistencies sometimes arise when later episodes directly conflict with things that were previously established.
“Bringing Up Brady” Makes No Effort To Acknowledge the Events of “Patriot Games”

As a long-time viewer, I always appreciated Family Guy‘s knack for incorporating pop culture, and their 2006 episode with Tom Brady is a perfect example. Given the show’s New England setting, having the NFL superstar voice himself felt natural. The episode, “Patriot Games,” is a riot – it’s all about Peter Griffin somehow joining the Patriots and becoming their star, and Brady plays along brilliantly. Even twenty years later, it’s still one of the funniest and most memorable storylines Family Guy has ever done. Seriously, if you’re a fan of either football or the show, it’s a must-watch!
In a recent episode of Family Guy (“Bringing Up Brady” from Season 24), Tom Brady made a comeback, again voiced by Josh Robert Thompson. It initially looked like the show would continue the storyline established between Brady and the Griffin family. However, the episode completely ignored the events of a previous encounter in 2006 – there wasn’t even a single mention of it. While this episode starts a new story with Brady, the Griffins act like they’ve never known him before, which feels strange and makes the plot confusing.
Explaining ‘Family Guy’s Tom Brady Continuity Error

Episodes like “Patriot Games” and “Bringing Up Brady” are created by the show’s team. While this might explain the mistake with Tom Brady, it doesn’t change the fact that most of the main voice actors on Family Guy have been with the show since it began. Although there have been many episodes over the years, “Patriot Games” is particularly memorable for featuring a world-class athlete as a guest star. It’s reasonable to think someone involved in the show, especially Seth MacFarlane, should have noticed the mistake in the “Bringing Up Brady” script.
It seems the most reasonable explanation is that Family Guy deliberately avoided connecting “Bringing Up Brady” to the earlier “Patriot Games” episode. While it’s a surprising choice to keep them separate, it’s not unusual for the show. As we’ve seen, Family Guy doesn’t rely on a detailed, consistent backstory like many other series. Perhaps Seth MacFarlane and the team simply wanted to make fun of Brady’s new job as a football commentator without having to consider what happened in “Patriot Games.” I still feel like it was a missed chance for a connected storyline – the show used to frequently bring back James Woods for multiple related episodes – but it looks like this wasn’t planned for Brady’s return.
