Fan Favorite Event Horizon Comic Headed to Second Printing and Getting All New Cover (Exclusive)

The film ‘Event Horizon,’ a well-loved cosmic horror classic produced by Paramount Pictures in 1997, depicts a team responding to a distress signal from the eponymous spaceship. Upon boarding, they discover the ship’s crew brutally murdered and tormented by an entity that seems to have originated from actual Hell. After much fan demand over the years, IDW agreed to create a prequel comic entitled ‘Event Horizon: Dark Descent.’ This narrative delves into the chilling events that befell the Event Horizon’s crew, detailing their harrowing journey through Hell which ultimately leads to the team’s disintegration and sets the scene for the highly regarded space horror movie.

Enthusiasts are clearly enamored with “Dark Descent,” as the first issue quickly ran out of stock, prompting IDW to release a limited second printing with a fresh cover designed by Christian Ward, the series writer. Moreover, ComicBook has been granted an exclusive sneak peek into issue #2, which we will unveil further in this post. It’s undeniably an exhilarating moment for fans of “Event Horizon.

Brand New Cover, Same Great Comic

The five-issue miniseries titled “Event Horizon: Dark Descent” follows the tragic journey and demise of the original crew from the spacecraft Event Horizon. As they venture to test a revolutionary gravity engine, they unwittingly plunge into the depths of Hell. Penned by Christian Ward, known for his work on “Batman: City of Madness” and “Two-Face“, and illustrated by Tristan Jones who has previously worked on “Aliens: Defiance” and “Tales of the TMNT“, this series promises a dark exploration of both cosmic realms and human psyche. Each crew member encounters their deepest, malevolent thoughts throughout the voyage. This collaboration between these talented creators is sure to impress fans of the series and film alike, with Ward himself designing the striking cover for the second printing.

If I could go back to my 21-year-old self on that significant day in 1997, after seeing ‘Event Horizon’ for the first time, and inform him that one day he’d be writing its official prequel, he would have thought I was crazy! But now, I am ecstatically delighted with the reception to our initial issue, which took nearly 28 years to materialize. I’m incredibly proud of the book that Tristan and colorist Pip Martin are creating, and it’s fantastic to see it connect with both long-time fans and newcomers. However, be advised, because our journey into hell has only JUST started.

Jones expressed that being amazed was an understatement of how he felt. The creative backing from Christian, who had supported him for a long time, was fantastic, but Pip Martin as the colorist and Nic Niño, especially as the editor, have put in extraordinary effort on this book. As someone returning to comics after a while, such support is already significant, but when you witness how both devoted fans of this cult classic and newcomers have enthusiastically responded to it, it surpasses all expectations.

We’ve put our heart into creating what we believe is an exceptional book, and it’s thrilling to see it resonate with people as we had envisioned. As we embark on our first issue, I am genuinely excited to witness the reactions from those who have supported us so far (and hopefully many more now that we are reprinting!). I can hardly contain my anticipation for their response to the chilling events and characters aboard this ship we are about to reveal.

You can secure your copy from the second printing until September 8th, as it’ll be available in retail stores starting October 15th.

A Descent Into Madness and Murder

As a passionate filmgoer, let me set the scene: The sequel picks up immediately where the first installment left off. Our protagonist Devlin, the ship’s navigator, finds himself in a physical altercation with Nia, the communications officer, just before receiving an arrest notice. In a dramatic twist, the vessel activates its faster-than-light engine and vanishes, plunging into what feels like a Hellish abyss. During this abrupt jump, Nia sustains a head injury that proves fatal.

The opening scene finds Devlin carrying Nia’s lifeless body through the ship’s corridors, his mind filled with memories of his father’s advice to dodge and weave when faced with blows. His thoughts meander back to his challenging upbringing, remembering how he perceived his dad’s martial arts lessons as a disguised excuse for violence, leading to a troubled past marked by run-ins with the law. Devlin’s life has been defined by an unwavering desire to evade pain, a theme that continues to resonate even in these dire circumstances.

Just prior to embarking on this mission, Devlin was behind the wheel of his car. Upon glancing at his phone, he noticed a text confirming the mission’s approval. However, due to distraction, he collided with a young bicyclist, causing instant fatal injuries. Rather than reporting the incident, he swiftly departed the scene, wishing the ship would whisk him to a remote location before being apprehended. Now, following a lifetime of evading suffering, he finds himself in a place akin to Hell, and his only thought is that he might as well wait here until his father arrives.

#2 of “Event Horizon: Dark Descent” is expected to mirror the film’s madness and obscurity, offering a deep dive into the characters’ troubled psyches. Based on the intriguing sneak peek and the captivating new artwork, it seems that this series will be an engaging read for fans of the movie.

The chance to pre-order “Event Horizon: Dark Descent” #2 ends on September 1st, and it’s set to be available for purchase in stores starting from October 8th.
