Fan Favorite Original X-Files Star Addresses Possible Return in Ryan Coogler’s Reboot [Exclusive]

Ryan Coogler’s planned revival of The X-Files is moving forward, with Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel cast as the new lead FBI agents. A key question remains: how will the show incorporate characters from the original series? While Gillian Anderson has expressed support for Coogler’s vision, it’s still uncertain if she’ll appear. There’s also been no word on whether any other actors from the original The X-Files will reprise their roles.

I recently spoke with Robert Patrick about his new horror film, Mermaid, and of course, I had to ask about John Doggett! He’s so enthusiastic about revisiting that character and the X-Files universe – he really loves Doggett, calling him his favorite role ever and cherishing his time as a lead. He also expressed huge admiration for Ryan Coogler, having been really impressed with Sinners. But, and it’s a bit sad to say, Robert doesn’t quite see how Doggett would fit into this new series. He seems confident Coogler will do amazing work, just that Doggett’s story might not be part of it.

Robert Patrick Eager to Return to The X-Files Franchise, But Doesn’t See It

Patrick joined The X-Files in its eighth season after David Duchovny left. While some fans initially disliked him as a replacement for Mulder, Doggett proved to be an even bigger skeptic than Scully and eventually won them over during his two seasons on the show. Fans who are upset that Patrick believes his character doesn’t fit into the series might be even more disappointed to learn that he’s been considered for other attempts to revive the show, but those plans never came to fruition.

Patrick explained that he hasn’t revisited the X-Files since directing the series finale. He’s always been committed to other projects whenever the show has been revived or continued, including a tenth season. While they’ve checked his availability in the past, it never aligned with their schedule. He doesn’t think his character, John Doggett, would fit into this new reboot, but he’s eager to see Ryan Coogler’s vision for the show and where he takes the story.

Doggett wasn’t included in the 2008 X-Files movie or the show’s revival in the 2010s, so it’s understandable why the actor, Patrick, might think his character isn’t part of the new plans, particularly since the show appears to be introducing new faces. However, Ryan Coogler is a dedicated fan of The X-Files, and it wouldn’t be shocking to discover he’s at least thought about including Doggett somehow, even if only with a quick mention.

The new X-Files revival, led by Coogler, seems to be taking a typical approach for television shows. Hulu has only ordered a single pilot episode so far, and, like the recent Buffy revival, they’ll likely decide whether to move forward with the series after reviewing it. If they do decide to continue, there’s a chance Patrick might return to his role after a 24-year gap.
