Back in March 2021, when Paramount+ initially debuted, its Star Trek content, featuring shows like Star Trek Discovery, rapidly gained popularity. In an effort to provide even more top-notch Star Trek content, Paramount+ started pouring resources into new productions such as Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. However, not all of the service’s Star Trek series achieved the same level of success. For instance, Star Trek: Prodigy, which garnered a devoted fanbase, had a brief run on Paramount+ before moving to Netflix. As per recent reports from TV Line, it seems that the show’s fate has been determined now.
The animated series titled Star Trek: Prodigy, which aired on both Paramount+ and Nickelodeon, received widespread acclaim from both critics and fans, boasting a Fresh 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, it seems that a third season will not materialize. The show revolves around an eclectic group of young aliens who stumble upon an abandoned Starfleet vessel named the U.S.S. Protostar in the Delta Quadrant. Initially airing on Paramount+ before being canceled, it was rescued for a second season by Netflix. With its departure from Netflix slated for later this year, it seems that the series will need to find another platform if a third season is ever to take flight. However, given that Paramount Global Content Distribution has labeled Season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy as the final season, it appears that such an installment may not be in the cards.
news about the cancellation of the show’s second run emerges, following its second season receiving a nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming by the Television Critics Association. The series now gears up for tough competition from shows like Doctor Who, Heartstopper, and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. This is the second time the show has been nominated for a Television Critics Association accolade; Season 1 of Star Trek: Prodigy was up for one in 2023 but was bested by Marvel Studios’ Ms. Marvel.
The animated series titled “Prodigy” was developed by Kevin and Dan Hageman, primarily to introduce the concept of “Star Trek” to a younger demographic, which later aired on Nickelodeon. The show boasted an impressive ensemble cast, including Jason Mantzoukas, Ella Purnell, John Noble, Kate Mulgrew, Jimmi Simpson, Daveed Diggs, Jason Alexander, Robert Beltran, Jameela Jamil, and Wil Wheaton. Although the series’ future appears uncertain, enthusiasts can still immerse themselves in other “Star Trek” productions available on Paramount+, such as “Star Trek: Lower Decks”, “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”, and “Star Trek: Section 31” – the inaugural movie designed for streaming.
Supporters are actively seeking methods to preserve “Star Trek: Prodigy” and have initiated a petition due to its success in saving the series after Season 1. Regrettably, given that “Star Trek: Prodigy” has not been popular among Netflix viewers, if the show does not secure another platform for broadcast, it looks unlikely that this will transpire.
The initial season of “Star Trek: Prodigy” is no longer accessible on Netflix. Similarly, the second season with twenty episodes will depart from the streaming service on January 1st, 2026. At this point, it remains undecided if or where viewers can watch the series once it’s gone from Netflix. Currently, both seasons of “Star Trek: Prodigy” are available for purchase on Blu-Ray and DVD.
