The recent Star Wars sequels weren’t universally loved when it came to the story, but audiences generally liked the performances of the actors. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver brought a fresh energy to the franchise, had great on-screen chemistry, and offered new takes on classic Star Wars characters. Even though the story wasn’t always consistent, many fans want to see these actors return and continue developing their roles – as evidenced by the strong reaction to the cancelled The Hunt for Ben Solo project. Ridley is confirmed to reprise her role in Star Wars: New Jedi Order, but Lucasfilm needs to address certain issues before her co-stars will join her.
John Boyega recently discussed what it would take for him to reprise his role as Finn in a future Star Wars project. Speaking at Liverpool Comic Con (as reported by Collider), Boyega explained that he and Oscar Isaac (who plays Poe Dameron) prefer to keep their characters’ friendship exclusive to the films. He emphasized the need for a strong script and a movie opportunity. He also mentioned reaching out to Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca) hoping he would join them on a new adventure, suggesting that if he could get both Suotamo and Isaac on board, a return could be possible.
The Timing Could Be Perfect for John Boyega’s Star Wars Return

While John Boyega hasn’t committed to any upcoming Star Wars projects, now might be a good time for him to consider returning. After focusing on Disney+ shows for several years, Lucasfilm is starting to make Star Wars movies again. The film The Mandalorian & Grogu is set to release next summer, kicking off a new series of films that also includes Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently announced at Star Wars Celebration in Japan that even more movies are in the works. Although new Star Wars TV shows, like Season 2 of Ahsoka, are still planned, Lucasfilm appears to be prioritizing films again after a break.
Lucasfilm is considering stories set after the most recent Star Wars trilogy. Two potential projects, Starfighter and New Jedi Order, could bring back the character Finn. New Jedi Order seems like the more likely option, as it directly follows Rey’s story from The Rise of Skywalker, and Finn could help her establish a new Jedi training center. Starfighter is intended as a new story, though some believe it will tie into the existing Skywalker saga. Bringing Finn back in either project would allow the creators to explore his potential Force abilities and address criticisms of his character arc in the previous films.
While a story exploring Finn’s connection to the Force would be interesting, John Boyega has expressed more enthusiasm for developing the relationship between Finn and Poe Dameron. The two characters quickly became friends in The Force Awakens, and fans clearly enjoy their on-screen chemistry. A movie focusing on Finn and Poe as partners—similar to a buddy cop film—could be really successful. Lucasfilm is now open to new ideas and allowing filmmakers to pursue stories they’re passionate about, even if they don’t directly tie into existing plots. With a strong proposal, a standalone adventure featuring Finn and Poe working together for the New Republic after The Rise of Skywalker is definitely possible. If Rey is getting her own movie, there’s no reason Finn and Poe couldn’t as well.
While Star Wars is exploring Finn’s story in other formats like books and comics, it’s uncertain if John Boyega will return to the role in a film. Boyega has expressed concerns about Finn’s storyline in the recent Star Wars films, which makes the script particularly important. Lucasfilm is currently struggling to finalize the story for the planned New Jedi Order movie. There’s also a possibility that if the new film Starfighter does well, Ryan Gosling’s character could interact with Finn and Poe. Many fans agree Boyega was great as Finn and would enjoy seeing him return to the role in some capacity.
