I can’t help but echo the sentiments of many Crunchyroll subscribers, as Takopi’s Original Sin struck us like a thunderbolt! The first episode was an emotional rollercoaster, leaving viewers both heartbroken and spellbound by its raw portrayal of childhood torment, dysfunctional families, mental health struggles, and violence. It was a gut-wrenching debut that left us stunned, and the series didn’t hesitate to continue pushing boundaries with its second episode.
As we eagerly await each new installment, fans who can’t get enough of Takopi’s Original Sin’s unforgiving storytelling are scouring for another series that plumbs similar emotional depths. For those ardent admirers, I have a manga recommendation tailored just for you!
The Grimm Tale of Takopi – Anime Debut for Summer 2025
This upcoming anime series, The Grimm Tale of Takopi, promises to be one of the darkest productions this season, or perhaps even in recent years. The storyline is derived from the single-chapter manga by Taizan 5, which was published on Shueisha’s online platform, Shonen Jump+, between December 2021 and March 2022 (surprisingly categorized as a shonen series). Despite its somber tone, the anime maintains an undercurrent of positivity and hope, largely due to the central character, Takopi – an extraterrestrial being.
However, this manga doesn’t shy away from portraying the intricate layers of everyday life in a raw and unflinching manner.
Takopi’s Original Sin Has Nothing on This Dark Manga

If you found Takopi’s Original Sin quite unsettling, this seinen manga will take that feeling to another level. This series is a masterwork of intricate emotional storytelling, penned by Inio Asano, who is renowned for his exceptional works like Dead Dead Demons Dedede Destruction, Sun Village, and Heroes. However, it’s this particular work that stands out as his most famous yet darkest. First published in Shogakukan’s Weekly Young Sunday in 2007, the series concluded in 2013 and is now available in seven volumes through VIZ Media in English.
Without a doubt, the manga under discussion is “Goodnight Punpun” by Asano. This seemingly innocent coming-of-age story can be misleading for new readers as it initially appears lighthearted. The protagonist, Onodera Punpun, is portrayed as a cartoon bird in the manga while other characters are sketched as humans. The initial chapter introduces us to Punpun and his school friends. It seems harmless enough with Punpun’s design being cute, and his friends appearing friendly. However, there’s a hint of tension at home, but nothing overly unusual. But the last page of the first chapter takes readers by surprise with an abrupt and dark turn.
Starting from then, “Goodnight Punpun” ceases to guide or provide solace to the reader, as Punpun’s story unfolds. In the initial volume itself, this means grappling with his uncertain future (remember he’s just a child), dealing with his violent father and indifferent mother, being looked after by his idle uncle, and being part of a factory fire. The situation worsens when you consider that Volume 1 is often perceived as the most optimistic and relaxed among all the parts.
In my perspective, what truly distinguishes “Punpun” from “Takopi” lies in its somber tone. Unlike “Takopi,” which is filled with rays of hope and sunshine, “Punpun” offers no such respite. It’s not about a bird named Punpun on a quest for inner peace, love, or friendship. Instead, it’s a poignant depiction of the raw, unfiltered challenges life throws at us all.
What Makes Punpun and Takopi So Devastating (And Great)

Among numerous anime and manga, some stand out for their profoundly intense scenes, such as “Goodnight Punpun” and “Takopi’s Original Sin.” One significant factor that sets them apart is their uncanny realism. Despite incorporating whimsical elements – like Takopi being a charming pink alien from Happy Planet, or Punpun appearing as a cartoon bird – these stories present worlds that are strikingly authentic. The creators, Asano and Taizan 5, have crafted realistic environments for their characters to dwell in, and these characters are direct reflections of their surroundings.
In my perspective as a passionate observer, both Punpun’s actions and reactions towards others are deeply rooted in his tumultuous home life. This similarity can also be seen in Marina Kirarazaka from the captivating series Takopi. The antagonistic behavior she displays towards Shizuka isn’t merely an act of cruelty; it’s a reflection of her own troubled family dynamics, particularly her resentment towards Shizuka for the deterioration of her parents’ bond.
On the other hand, Punpun, who feels unloved by his mother, is always striving to please others as if he’s trying to win her approval. This environment-influenced behavior, though regrettable, seems authentic and relatable in its portrayal. It’s a powerful reminder that characters aren’t one-dimensional; they carry complex histories that shape their actions.
Both narratives feature straightforward and earthbound storylines: Takopi aims to assist Shizuka in dealing with bullying, while Punpun yearns for maturity. However, these stories are intricately layered with complex themes that resonate deeply with audiences, making them emotionally heavy and challenging tales to engage with.
Each week, you can find new episodes of “Takopi’s Original Sin” on Crunchyroll. Meanwhile, “Goodnight Punpun” has been translated into English by VIZ Media.
