It’s been six years since a new Avengers movie was released by Marvel Studios. Many fans consider Avengers: Endgame to be the high point of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, filled with satisfying character arcs, appropriate conclusions, and enjoyable surprise appearances. Next year, the Avengers series will continue with , and Marvel Studios hopes to match the quality of earlier films and achieve significant box office numbers. While the new film reportedly won’t include familiar faces like Iron Man and Steve Rogers, Marvel Studios is still working on ways to generate excitement.
Avengers: Doomsday originally went by the name The Kang Dynasty, with plans for Jonathan Majors to play the villain, Kang the Conqueror, and Destin Daniel Cretton directing. However, after Marvel Studios fired Majors, they changed course. Cretton was then moved to work on Spider-Man: Brand New Way. To recapture the interest of fans potentially turned off after The Multiverse Saga, Marvel announced at San Diego Comic-Con last year that the Russo Brothers would return to direct the next Avengers movie, with Robert Downey Jr. starring as Doctor Doom. Now that the Russo Brothers and Downey Jr. are back with the MCU, the filmmakers have been sharing glimpses of the Avengers: Doomsday production, bringing back memories of their earlier work. These posts weren’t hugely revealing, but considering the Russo Brothers’ history of building anticipation, they’ve clearly figured out how to get people talking, and some fans are now wondering if a specific storyline might play a role in the upcoming Avengers films.
Some Fans Suspect an Avengers vs. X-Men Tease
The Russo Brothers are known for playfully hinting at upcoming projects to their fans on social media. They once subtly revealed the title Avengers: Endgame by hiding it within a photo of props from the movie set. Their latest Instagram post follows a similar pattern, showing a black-and-white photo of a set, including Joe Russo sitting in a chair, and the caption “Look hard…” Many fans believe this new post contains hidden letters – an “A”, a “V”, and an “X” – which suggests that Avengers vs. X-Men might be their next project.
Currently, Marvel Studios has only a few movies planned for theatrical release in the next few years: the next two Avengers films and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. They are also holding a release date in July 2027, which has led fans to speculate about potential projects, ranging from Blade to another Doctor Strange movie. Recently, the Russo Brothers hinted at something big, leading some to think that a Avengers vs. X-Men film might have been planned for that summer release.
Even so, that idea seems less probable after Disney’s recent announcement. If the Russo Brothers are hinting at Avengers vs. X-Men, it’s more likely that Marvel Studios intends to revise the title of the next Avengers movie again. Although Doctor Doom would be a major attraction for the upcoming Avengers film, a title like Avengers vs. X-Men could generate even greater audience enthusiasm than Doomsday.
Marvel’s Avengers vs. X-Men Comic Book Event, Explained
Should the next film be titled Avengers vs. X-Men, it would be the same name as a popular 2012 comic book series. That series was created by a team of well-known writers and artists, including Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Jason Aaron, Ed Brubaker, Jonathan Hickman, John Romita Jr., Olivier Coipel and Adam Kubert. The main story spanned 12 issues, and was expanded with several related comic titles. While Marvel Studios often takes ideas from the comics for its movie titles, the films usually only borrow a few key plot points from the original stories.
As a huge fan, I’ve been thinking about what an MCU Avengers vs. X-Men movie would look like, and I’m pretty sure it would be different from the 2012 comic series. In the original Avengers vs. X-Men storyline from 2012, everything kicked off when the Phoenix Force came back. Basically, Cyclops, who was leading the X-Men, thought the Phoenix Force was there to help mutants survive, but the Avengers were convinced it was going to destroy the planet. It was a major disagreement right from the start!
She was a key figure in the conflict between the Avengers and X-Men, as the X-Men believed she was a “mutant messiah.” The story included surprising turns, character deaths, and other intense moments. A title like Avengers vs. X-Men would excite fans familiar with the storyline, but it might be underwhelming if the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t adapt much of it, considering where The Multiverse Saga currently stands and the focus on Doctor Doom.
Several X-Men Characters Will Appear in Avengers: Doomsday
Marvel Studios is known for creating incredible team-up movies, and Avengers: Doomsday could be their biggest one yet. Although official details about Avengers: Doomsday are still limited, Marvel Studios recently announced some of the cast members, generating a lot of buzz with their memorable chair presentation live stream.
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, has revealed that the next movie will include a wide range of heroes, such as the Avengers, the New Avengers (also called the Thunderbolts), the people of Wakanda, the Fantastic Four, the Talokanil, and the X-Men. Additionally, Marvel Studios plans to use the multiverse to bring back the actors who previously played the X-Men in the films made by Fox. This means we might see familiar faces from those movies return in new roles.
“The fun of an Avengers movie is introducing people to each other and seeing how very different personalities get along. In the case of a movie that involves the threat of worlds literally colliding, it’s fun to see them visit each other’s homes. So with the Baxter Building set, let’s say it had four or five people in it at most in the Fantastic Four movie. And it’s got a heck of a lot more people in it [in Doomsday]. It’s a thrill to see that interaction. And it’s surreal for me, who’s been around for 25 years.” — Kevin Feige .
Patrick Stewart previously played Professor Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Deadpool & Wolverine successfully reunited Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds. Avengers: Doomsday will see Stewart reprise his role as Professor X, this time alongside Magneto (Ian McKellen), Cyclops (James Marsden), Mystique (Rebecca Romijn), Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming), Beast (Kelsey Grammer) and Gambit (Channing Tatum).
In addition, Ryan Reynolds will be appearing, and we can probably expect even more unexpected cameos. Considering how many mutants are planned to show up, and knowing that heroes often clash before teaming up, a battle between the X-Men and Avengers in Doomsday seems probable. However, it’s not certain whether this conflict will be the main focus of the movie, or if it will even lead to a title change.
The Russo Brothers’ Tease Could Mean Something Else
Okay, so the Russos dropped this mysterious post, and everyone’s going wild! Of course, my first thought was Avengers vs. X-Men – that would be epic! But honestly, it could be anything. A lot of people are thinking it hints at when we’ll finally get the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. I’ve seen some fans pointing out the “A” in the picture and thinking it’s just a nod to the Avengers, but others believe the Russos are actually talking about Avatar – specifically, Avatar: Fire and Ash, which is Disney’s huge movie this year. And to make things even more interesting, there’s been buzz that Disney might drop the Avengers: Doomsday trailer alongside that one!
Avengers: Doomsday isn’t scheduled to be released for over a year, and Marvel Studios usually waits until closer to the release date to share trailers. However, Avengers: Doomsday is a unique Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, and releasing a trailer now would generate significant buzz leading up to the movie next year. The Russo Brothers are hinting at something big, and a short teaser trailer in December seems like a very likely possibility.
As a huge fan, I’m so hyped that filming for Avengers: Doomsday is finished and the release date is getting closer! We’re definitely going to get even more little sneak peeks, and that’s awesome. The Russo Brothers are pros – they’ve given us some of the best Marvel movies ever, and they’re *really* good at building up excitement. There’s a lot of buzz about Avengers: Doomsday, but honestly, I’m also a little worried because of some things I’ve heard about what went on behind the scenes, and Marvel hasn’t been perfect lately. I’m still counting down the days, though!
The Russo Brothers’ latest Instagram post is a great way to start building excitement for Avengers: Doomsday. Hopefully, Marvel Studios will be able to show audiences over the next few months why the MCU continues to be the highest-grossing film franchise ever.
