The Fantastic Four‘s Initial Strides”
At a crucial juncture in its cinematic journey, “The Fantastic Four’s Initial Strides” has witnessed a noticeable decline in viewership during its second week, with earnings dropping by over 60% compared to its opening weekend gross of $117.6 million. This trend suggests a decrease in audience interest and raises questions about the movie’s long-term box office prospects within the Marvel Universe’s latest reboot. As fresh releases enter the fray, the film now confronts mounting competition for viewer attention.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps box office drops by 66%
In its second weekend in U.S. cinemas, Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps generated $40 million, marking a 66% drop from its opening weekend earnings of $117.6 million. On Friday, the film grossed $11.7 million, followed by $15.5 million on Saturday and $12.8 million on Sunday, playing in 4,125 theaters. The movie’s domestic earnings now total $198.4 million after ten days. Imax venues accounted for $5.2 million or 13% of the weekend’s takings, raising its Imax earnings to $26.3 million (as reported by Deadline).
This 66% decrease in viewership follows the pattern observed in recent Marvel releases. For instance, Captain America: Brave New World experienced a 68% drop in its second weekend, while Thunderbolts saw a 56% decline. However, James Gunn’s Superman movie dropped only 53% during its second week, earning $58.5 million.
After ten days, Superman had amassed a domestic total of $236.2 million and concluded its fourth weekend with earnings of $316.2 million (according to Box Office Mojo). Marvel reports that First Steps is outpacing Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania by 19%, as the latter film ended its domestic run at $214.5 million.
I’m delighted to share that the movie I supported, First Steps, has earned a staggering $368.7 million worldwide, with a whopping $198.4 million in the U.S. and an impressive $170.3 million overseas. It continues to hold the title as the highest-grossing Fantastic Four film ever made. Kevin Feige, a key figure in our industry, confirmed that this movie is completely independent from anything we’ve produced before, underscoring its unique standalone status. The film received an A- CinemaScore and a 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which speaks volumes about its quality.
In the latest box office battle, the opening of “The Bad Guys 2” raked in $22.2 million, compared to “$17 million for the revival of “The Naked Gun.” Over a span of five days, “Neon’s Together” managed to earn $10.8 million. This suggests that increased competition may have contributed to a decline in overall earnings.
Last weekend’s total box office earnings were $126 million, which is 27% lower compared to the same timeframe in 2024. Conversely, the domestic box office for the year so far has reached $5.4 billion, representing a 10% increase from 2024’s figures. Notably, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is spearheading Marvel Studios’ 2025 film lineup.
