Fantastic Four Director Addresses Abandoned Star Trek Film (Could It Still Happen?)

For several years, Paramount has made repeated attempts to revisit the Star Trek series on the big screen. After J.J. Abrams’ 2009 film Star Trek kick-started a successful revival of the long-standing sci-fi franchise, there was a lull following the release of Star Trek Beyond in 2016. The franchise has been in a limbo state since then. Eager to resume their journey on the Enterprise, Paramount has engaged multiple directors to lead the project over time, one of whom was Matt Shakman, who eventually departed from the film to direct Fantastic Four for Marvel Studios. In recent times, Shakman has shared some insights about that Star Trek movie and whether or not it might still materialize with a different director at the helm.

In an interview with Variety, Shakman disclosed that in the spring of 2022, he held talks with Marvel Studios regarding the Fantastic Four, even though sets were constructed and a crew was hired for Star Trek 4. However, by the summer of 2022, there seemed to be a significant shift. The sets were dismantled, the crew was dismissed, and most notably, the story underwent a major transformation. Despite his reluctance to elaborate on what Star Trek 4 would have been about, he merely said, “The core concept, I believe, still holds true. I truly hope they get the opportunity to make that film.

In July 2021, Matt Shakman was appointed as the director for what would have been Star Trek 4, produced by Paramount. The screenplay for this sequel was penned by the writers of Captain Marvel, Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. This appointment came after three other directors had previously been assigned to direct various Star Trek projects for the studio. Initially, Toby Haynes (known for Andor) was intended to work on an origin film for Paramount, but he was later replaced. S.J. Clarkson was initially hired to direct Star Trek 4, but she eventually moved on to direct Madame Web for Sony. Noah Hawley followed, but Shakman ultimately got the job. Since then, no other director has been appointed for the film by Paramount.

Last March, Paramount brought aboard a new writer for “Star Trek 4”. Steve Yockey was tasked by Paramount to write the script for “Star Trek 4”, but no additional details have been disclosed since his hiring. Over the years, Yockey has amassed an impressive portfolio, having contributed to shows like “The Flight Attendant” on Max, “Awkward” on MTV, “Supernatural” on CW, and “Scream” on MTV. With Yockey now on board, it appears that the forthcoming “Star Trek 4” might deviate from the direction previously intended by Shakman who was set to direct.

The future is uncertain about whether or not Star Trek 4 will actually leave the production phase, given its numerous setbacks and backstage alterations. Nevertheless, director Sackheim, along with the cast of Paramount’s Star Trek reboot, appear eager to bring this story to fruition in some form. Meanwhile, fans can enjoy the first three installments of Paramount’s Star Trek reboot on Peacock, as well as a variety of highly-regarded television shows such as Star Wars: Discovery, Star Wars: Strange New Worlds, and Star Wars: Lower Decks.
