When Marvel Comics launched a new era of adventures with The Fantastic Four in the early 1960s, Sue Storm, also known as the Invisible Woman, was a key member alongside Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, her brother Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, and Ben Grimm/The Thing, as they battled villains. Because of this, she’s consistently appeared in adaptations of the team, including all four live-action movies featuring the Fantastic Four, with different actresses taking on the role of this iconic superhero.
Sue Storm is a major figure in superhero movies and TV, but some adaptations of her character have been better than others. Looking at the live-action movies, it’s clear she hasn’t always been portrayed well – although the latest version is a significant improvement.
Here are the live-action Sue Storms ranked, from worst to best:
4. Kata Mara’s Sue Storm/Invisible Woman in Fantastic Four (2015)

One of the biggest issues with the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot was Kate Mara’s portrayal of Sue Storm, also known as the Invisible Woman. The movie’s poorly written script didn’t give her character much depth, and she’s mostly remembered for the noticeable wigs she wore during additional filming.
This version of Storm lacked a strong connection with her teammates, which was surprising given the film’s focus on family. Her personality felt underdeveloped, and her powers weren’t visually exciting. Ultimately, this portrayal of Sue Storm felt empty, offering little for audiences or the actress playing her, Kate Mara.
3. Jessica Alba’s Sue Storm/Invisible Woman in Fantastic Four (2005) & Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)

The portrayal of Sue Storm in Tim Story’s Fantastic Four movies was a missed opportunity, ultimately hindering Jessica Alba’s ability to showcase her talent. Instead of developing a strong character, the films relied on tired gags – mostly revolving around her invisibility and using her as a plot device to drive the stories of the male characters, including even the Silver Surfer. This approach failed to capture the character’s potential and left Alba with little to work with.
This version of Sue Storm had more relaxed scenes with Johnny and Ben, which was a nice touch. However, overall, it was another disappointing portrayal of a Marvel hero who deserved a better story.
2. Rebecca Staab’s Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman from The Fantastic Four (1994)

The saying goes, “In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king,” and that applies to the different movie versions of Sue Storm. Even the version that never officially made it to theaters is better than the first two attempts from 20th Century Fox. Rebecca Staab, who played Sue Storm in the low-budget 1990s Fantastic Four film, didn’t have much to work with in terms of character development. However, aside from the strange age difference between her character and Reed Richards when they meet, her portrayal of the Invisible Woman isn’t particularly bad.
Her portrayal of the character is charming and perfectly complements the movie’s vintage style. She brings a genuine personality to the role, something that Mara and Alba didn’t quite achieve in their performances.
1. Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman from The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025)

Vanessa Kirby’s performance as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman in The Fantastic Four: First Steps finally delivers a strong, live-action version of the character. Kirby is captivating in the role, giving Storm a real sense of weight and authority – especially in a powerful scene where she addresses concerned citizens of New York. Unlike previous portrayals that sidelined Sue Storm, this version is a commanding presence, making it clear why people would trust and follow her anywhere. The film also vividly showcases her powers, particularly in a thrilling finale focused on the safety of her son, Franklin Richards. Without a doubt, Vanessa Kirby delivers the definitive cinematic portrayal of Sue Storm.
