Fantastic Four: First Steps reveals huge box office opening and hits a new height for 2025

Following the initial two Marvel movie launches of 2025 (Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts) underperformed at the box office, the studio was desperately in need of a success story. It seems that The Fantastic Four: First Steps has delivered on this front.

In its initial weekend, the movie raked in an impressive $218 million worldwide, far surpassing the combined earnings of the two previously mentioned films during their opening weekends, with one earning $192 million and the other $162 million.

The earnings for this movie during its premiere weekend are almost identical to those of James Gunn’s Superman – the initial release in the reimagined DC Universe – which grossed approximately $220 million, a slightly adjusted figure from the previously stated $217 million.

On the other hand, it’s important to note that most of Superman’s earnings were from US moviegoers, whereas the Fantastic Four’s box office earnings were nearly equally divided between domestic and international audiences, with $118 million earned in the U.S. compared to $100 million overseas.

Kevin Feige, head at Marvel, is likely expecting this venture to mark the beginning of a prosperous cinematic journey, aiming to rejuvenate the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to its former brilliance, in anticipation of the upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday slated for release next year.

Besides earning significant revenue at the box office, the movie has also gained positive reviews from critics. Currently, it boasts an impressive 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, with our own critique awarding it a 4-star rating, describing it as a “vibrant, skillfully crafted, and generally entertaining comic book extravaganza”.

In this movie, which is the 37th installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and one of the briefest yet, we meet Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing for the first time.

Initially, these character adaptations do not belong to the primary Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but rather exist within a separate universe that showcases a blend of futuristic and retro aesthetics.

Given that they’ll be featured in Avengers: Doomsday, and taking into account the post-credits scene from Thunderbolts, it seems their time may not be extended for much longer.

*Note: The movie “Thunderbolts” has not been released yet, so the specifics of the post-credits scene are speculative or based on rumors or leaks.
