In this version of the Fantastic Four, we’re on our third iteration. The change, titled ‘First Steps’, is heading in a positive direction. Thankfully, unlike recent adaptations of Superman, this isn’t an origin story. Instead, we dive right into the action without much explanation about how Dr Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) acquired their superpowers and became Earth’s primary protectors against extraterrestrial threats.
In this newest rendition, I find myself immersed in a captivating blend of the past and future – a 1960’s New York City with a retro-futuristic flair. Here, our quartet resides as an extraordinary family unit: Reed and Sue, married with a baby on the horizon, and their makeshift sons – Sue’s brother Johnny, along with Ben Grimm – living together in a stunningly modern apartment adorned with art deco style.
However, their extraordinary abilities are soon to be tested as Galactus (Ralph Ineson) arrives, his hunger for planets making Earth his next target unless the Four agree to his ominous demand, which could potentially save our planet. Yet they steadfastly refuse this proposition, only to face the world’s population turning against us. Now, we must find a way to protect our world, restore our reputation, and defeat Galactus – a daunting task indeed.
In the continuation of the original superhero family, appearing every decade since 2005 and accurately portrayed by Marvel, the casting is flawless. A baby with elasticity and invisibility powers adds an intriguing twist to the storyline, implying that this child might be a rubbery, invisible entity (perhaps the reason for its conception was the absence of this trait). This unique element promises exciting developments in upcoming films. The talented Ralph Ineson voices Galactus, a formidable villain, and is supported by Julia Garner as a female Silver Surfer. Diehard fans might take issue with a female Silver Surfer, but the inclusion of humor through the family’s household robot H.E.R.B.I.E., reminiscent of R2-D2 yet channeling Temu, adds a lighthearted touch to the series.
Following some turbulent years in the Marvel cinematic universe, Fantastic Four: First Steps serves as a splendid comeback, striking a delightful harmony between awe-inspiring grandeur and a gentle touch. Don’t forget to stay till the end of the credits!
