Fantastic Four: First Steps Sets Unwanted MCU Record in Disney+ Debut

Look, as a big Marvel fan, it’s been a bit disappointing to see how things have gone lately. We all noticed Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts didn’t do as well as we’d hoped, and it’s the first time in over a decade that none of their movies made the top 10 at the box office. The Fantastic Four: First Steps was a little bit of a win, bringing in over $521 million worldwide, but even that wasn’t quite the blockbuster everyone expected. Honestly, because people seemed to really enjoy First Steps, I thought it would be huge on Disney+ too. But surprisingly, it hasn’t really taken off the way we’d hoped.

Disney+’s “Fantastic Four: First Steps” had a slow start, earning only 4.9 million views in its first five days, according to Nielsen data (via Comic Book Movie). This is the lowest debut viewership for any movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the streaming service. For comparison, “Brave New World” received 6.4 million views in its first five days, while “Thunderbolts*” reached 5.5 million.

The Fantastic Four: First Stepsā€˜ Disney+ Numbers Explained

While getting the lowest viewership numbers is never ideal, the situation for First Steps might not be as bad as it looks. Nielsen, the company that measures TV ratings, only tracks around 42,000 homes in the US. They collect data from special devices in these homes and then use that information to estimate overall viewership. However, with more people watching shows and movies on phones, computers, and tablets, there are growing questions about how accurate Nielsen’s numbers are. Their method worked well in the past when most people watched TV, but it doesn’t fully capture how people watch content today.

For example, shortly after its release on Disney+ in early November, The Fantastic Four: First Steps quickly became the most-watched movie on the platform worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. This suggests many Marvel fans actively chose to watch (or rewatch) the superhero team’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at home. While Nielsen data showed some weaknesses in the film’s performance, other measurements demonstrate that it was a huge success on streaming, similar to Brave New World and Thunderbolts before it.

You can watch The Fantastic Four: First Steps on Disney+, but it’s also available to buy or rent on platforms like Apple and Amazon, and you can even purchase it on Blu-ray. This means people have many ways to watch the movie that Nielsen might not track. While Nielsen’s data offers some insights, it doesn’t represent everyone who’s watching First Steps, so it shouldn’t be considered the only measure of the film’s success.

The main point is that not many traditional TV households watched First Steps, which isn’t too concerning given how people watch things now. However, it’s still a bit disappointing that Marvel’s biggest film of 2025 didn’t perform as well as other recent releases when measured by this standard. Some might see this as a sign that Marvel’s leading position in the entertainment world is weakening. But with Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday coming in 2026, the MCU is expected to rebound strongly next year.
