Fantastic Four Flat-Lines in Third Weekend at the Box Office

The initial estimates have been replaced with final numbers for the weekend box office earnings. It’s confirmed that “Fantastic Four: First Steps” experienced a decrease of approximately 59% in its third weekend, following a 67% drop in its second weekend.

The initial release of Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps was met with great excitement and grossed around $116 million within the U.S., indicating a promising start. Yet, its third weekend saw a significant decrease, which suggests potential difficulties for the series ahead. Unfortunately, this is the second consecutive weekend with a substantial decline, making the movie one of the most front-loaded films in the post-pandemic period.

Over its third weekend in cinemas, Fantastic Four earned $15,784,767, placing it third behind fresh releases Weapons and Freakier Friday. This represents a significant 59% drop compared to the previous week’s earnings. Unfortunately, this decline suggests that Fantastic Four may continue to lose momentum, making it unlikely for the film to reach $500 million in total revenue. This figure is significantly lower than what Marvel had previously anticipated for the franchise, indicating that all three Marvel films released in 2025 are at risk of being financial disappointments and failing to surpass the half billion mark.

As for the third weekend, Superman 2025 has outperformed Fantastic Four domestically by approximately $60 million. Moreover, James Gunn isn’t planning to introduce Superman in a pair of films, each with a break-even point of around $1.5 billion. Given this, it’s safe to say that the stakes are high for Disney.

‘THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS’ has grossed over $430M worldwide.

Eyeing a $490–520M finish.

Despite a significant decline from one weekend to the next, the movie “Fantastic Four” encountered tough rivalry, notably from Warner Bros, who appear determined to bolster the American cinema industry. The horror film “Weapons” claimed the number one spot at the box office with a robust opening and earned around $42.5 million domestically. Meanwhile, “Freakier Friday” maintained the second position, earning approximately $29-$30 million over the same period.

By August 11th, the movie “Fantastic Four” has earned approximately $434 million worldwide. However, despite these figures initially appearing strong, the noticeable drop-offs in the middle of its run indicate a weak staying power, particularly when compared to other long-running Marvel productions. In fact, both critics and analysts have raised concerns about the film’s substantial second and third-week declines, such as an 80% decrease from Friday to Friday during week two. This trend might signal potential problems for Marvel’s overall catalog, including tie-ins to the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday.” It’s even possible that future Spider-Man films could outperform Avengers movies given that Doomsday is spearheaded by Pedro Pascal, Thunderbolts, and the new Captain America. Perhaps it’s time to move Tom Holland and Chris Pratt to more prominent positions in the lineup!

For Marvel Studios, one potential worry could be that Spider-Man may not always come through in a pinch. This is because the success of “No Way Home” was significantly boosted by its nostalgic appeal, which brought in massive box office earnings with the return of both Andrew Garfield and Toby Maguire as Spider-Man. While Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman continue to be major attractions, it’s unclear what else is there to warrant such high production budgets for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

It’s possible that Marvel movies might need to be made at a fraction of their current production costs due to decreasing box office revenues. Whether Disney and Kevin Feige can manage this reduction in budget isn’t immediately clear.
