Despite not being a blockbuster hit as anticipated by Disney and Marvel, The Fantastic Four: First Steps managed a respectable stint at the box office. Lately, it’s even climbed to become one of the top 50 highest-grossing films in Disney’s history, an impressive feat considering their long-standing success at the box office. To reach this position on the all-time charts, First Steps surpassed several beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe titles and has now surpassed another one. As updated numbers arrive, The Fantastic Four has outperformed one of the Infinity Saga’s most acclaimed films.
Currently, the box office earnings for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” stand at a impressive $259.8 million within the USA. Barely edging out its competitor, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which made $259.7 million in the US, it manages to set a new record. It’s important to note that these figures do not account for inflation adjustments.
How The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ Box Office Compares to Captain America: The Winter Soldier

In April 2014, Captain America: The Winter Soldier made a grand entrance with an impressive $95 million domestically during its opening weekend. This figure broke records for the highest debut in April, although it’s been surpassed by numerous films since then. On the other hand, The Fantastic Four: First Steps boasted an even more impressive start, earning $117.6 million in its first three days. After their opening weekends, the two movies followed different paths towards nearly $260 million in earnings each.
As a movie enthusiast, I can share that “The Winter Soldier” held strong during the weaker competition in spring, even managing to maintain the top spot for three consecutive weekends! Interestingly, it experienced a steep 56.6% drop in its second weekend. In stark contrast, “First Steps” saw a massive 67.1% decline during its second weekend, which was quite surprising given the generally positive reviews for “Fantastic Four.” Despite not being as critically acclaimed as “The Winter Soldier,” which is still hailed as one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s finest, many found “First Steps” to be a heartwarming and entertaining summer blockbuster. However, by early August, “Weapons” had taken over as the No. 1 film, pushing “First Steps” down the charts.
As a passionate movie reviewer, I’ve got to highlight an intriguing disparity between these two blockbusters that caught my attention. While both films have impressively graced our screens, they’ve had vastly different global receptions.
In the realm of international box office success, The Winter Soldier truly shined, raking in a staggering $714.4 million worldwide. On the other hand, First Steps, despite its captivating storyline and stellar performances, has only managed to secure $492.9 million globally so far. This means that, as of now, it’s highly unlikely that First Steps will surpass the global earnings of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Much like other major releases this year, the financial success of First Steps underscores how drastically the movie business landscape has evolved over the past few years. In fact, with only Superman managing to gross over $600 million worldwide in 2025, it’s clear that the competition among comic book films is fierce!
Currently, only the “Captain America” movie titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is being overtaken by 2016’s film “Captain America: Civil War.” The latter has garnered an impressive $408 million within the U.S. market. Notably, “Civil War” served as a significant event due to its similarity to another Avengers movie, gathering numerous characters together. Sadly, “First Steps” won’t surpass “Civil War,” given its business has significantly declined, but it should still manage to climb a few more positions on the all-time charts before it concludes.
