Fantastic Four: MCU Director Explains Why John Malkovich Was Cut From Movie

John Malkovich will not be appearing in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

This month, Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: Initial Journey will hit the big screen. Directed by Matt Shakman, it features Pedro Pascal portraying Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach stepping into the role of Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Joseph Quinn taking on Johnny Storm/Human Torch.

In May 2024, it became public knowledge that John Malkovich was part of the star-studded lineup for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” Although the character he would portray wasn’t disclosed, trailers hinted at his involvement in the film. Nevertheless, Marvel Cinematic Universe enthusiasts started speculating about the fate of Malkovich’s character after The Walt Disney Company’s official website stopped listing him among the cast members.

What did Matt Shakman say about John Malkovich and Fantastic Four?

In a confirmation, Shakman made it clear that Malkovich will no longer be part of The Fantastic Four: Initial Stages.

As reported by Variety, John Malkovich portrayed Red Ghost in certain initial sequences of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Shakman, the director, commented that Malkovich was outstanding and dedicated in his performance, but later found that his character didn’t align well with the overall narrative.

Shakman explained that many elements needed to be left out during the production process, as they were juggling various aspects such as creating a 60s-inspired future setting, introducing multiple villains, developing four main characters, and adding a child character. With so much to handle, some parts had to be sacrificed in order to refine the movie for its final release.

It was truly disappointing not to have him feature in the final cut of the movie. He’s not only one of my most cherished people but also a significant inspiration. As someone straddling the border between theater, film, and television, there isn’t anyone more inspiring than the founder of Steppenwolf Theater Company. His exceptional work as an actor on stage and his directorial achievements in theater, film, and acting itself – I felt privileged to have him participate.

Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits United States theaters on July 25, 2025.
