The ending of Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four film provides an explanation as to why the central superhero team travels to Earth 616 in Avengers: Doomsday, as hinted at in the post-credit scene of Thunderbolts. One of the most intriguing aspects that fans are discussing following the release of Fantastic Four: First Steps is the stunning Doctor Doom cliffhanger.
In this mid-film sequence, the malevolent Victor Von Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., is apprehended by Sue Storm (played by Vanessa Kirby), as she observes the latest addition to the Fantastic Four family, Franklin Richards. Additionally, a Thunderbolts post-credits scene revealed a Fantastic Four-labeled interdimensional vessel landing in the 616 universe, suggesting a direct link to the forthcoming Avengers: Doomsday film, where Marvel’s First Family will have a significant part to play.
Currently showing in theaters, ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ presents Marvel Studios’ rendition of the renowned superhero quartet. The latest production, headlined by Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn, chronicles the adventures of the Fantastic Four when their Earth from another dimension is targeted for destruction by the colossal Galactus.
Why Did The Fantastic Four Go to Earth 616 In MCU Thunderbolts Movie?
MCU enthusiasts have recently been treated to two consecutive post-credit scenes connected to “Avengers: Doomsday” – specifically, “Fantastic Four: First Steps” and “Thunderbolts“. Remarkably linked to each other and arguably among the most interconnected end-credits moments in MCU history, these scenes have sparked more questions than they’ve answered for viewers.
The main reason ‘First Steps’ is taking on the Fantastic Four is because they have to travel across different universes, moving from Earth 828 to Earth 616, as shown in Thunderbolts.
In the final scene of the film “Thunderbolts”, the newly formed group, now recognized as the New Avengers, watched as a rocket bearing the emblem of the Fantastic Four crashed into their world. This event was further explored in the movie “Fantastic Four”, where Doctor Doom demonstrated his fascination with the incredibly potent (yet still an infant) Franklin Richards.
It is speculated that certain members from Marvel’s original superhero team might be required to transition into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for the impending team-up, considering the escalating danger posed by Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Additionally, the movie First Steps could offer a clue as to why this is necessary.
Based on the preview of Thunderbolts, it appears that a widely-held fan theory is that Doom manages to abduct Franklin, which prompts Sue, Reed, Johnny, and Ben to quickly board the Excelsior and pursue the mysterious antagonist.
It seems more sensible that this move transports the characters to Earth 616, positioning Franklin as a sort of super-empowered plot device in the story “Doomsday“.
Instead, consider the possibility that these two post-credit scenes might be cleverly setting up a bait-and-switch. While most viewers believe it’s the Fantastic Four on that rocket at the end of Thunderbolts, it could just as easily be Doctor Doom himself.
In Jake Schreier’s Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster, we merely see the rocket without knowing who’s inside. Although the emblem on it resembles the Fantastic Four’s distinctive blue symbol, it doesn’t automatically mean they are operating the spacecraft.
Perhaps the scene hinted at in “First Steps” could lead to an intense action series where Downey’s Doomsday antagonist snatches Franklin and attempts an escape, leading to a dramatic chase. This might culminate in the villain boarding the Excelsior, utilizing Franklin’s enigmatic abilities to leap between realities.
In a different dimension from Doom, the Fantastic Four will need to master cross-dimensional transportation to rescue their fifth extraordinary member.
An alternative possibility might be that only some members of the Fantastic Four were aboard the rocket, which appeared during the closing credits of Thunderbolts.
In the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday,” it seems that not all members of the Fantastic Four will have a chance to meet Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. This might suggest that the main team in “First Steps” could be divided, with only two of them possibly making it to Earth 616 in the new Avengers movie.
Under this “divide and conquer” strategy, it seems logical when, following Doom’s capture of Franklin, there’s uncertainty about where on earth Latverian terror has relocated Sue and their four-year-old child.
Uncertain about the destination of the mysterious “Doomsday” villain, the Fantastic Four decided to split up and investigate potential destinations in different universes. Each team took a separate spaceship to explore various possibilities since the villain could have fled to any number of places following his break-in at the Baxter Building.
The reason behind the distinct appearance of the rocket ship that appeared on Earth in the 616 solar system, as depicted in ‘Thunderbolts’, is because it features four projections at the back rather than the three seen in ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’.
