Fantastic Four Star Reveals What Separates Them From Other MCU Teams

This week, Marvel Studios is ready to debut their newest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Known as “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, this film will be the initial appearance of the Fantastic Four characters within the MCU, following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox’s film rights for these characters in 2019. The movie presents a fresh take for Marvel Studios, combining a 60s-inspired style with an already established team from the beginning. In a recent interview with ComicBook, star Ebon Moss-Bachrach shared insights on how the Fantastic Four differ from other teams in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to Moss-Bachrach, who portrays The Thing in ‘First Steps’, many of the characters seem more like solitary figures, akin to the Lone Ranger. While they appear to get along somewhat, it’s as if they’re only on the same ship out of necessity. The Guardians of the Galaxy, for instance, seem to be a group that has come together haphazardly, much like a band of misfits, outcasts, and individuals who might not ordinarily fit together. In essence, these teams are reluctant and unwilling in certain ways.

Instead of being a team that reluctantly comes together, the Fantastic Four function more like a family unit. Removing one member is similar to taking a wheel off a car; everything seems to fall apart without them. Their bond dates back to before they gained their powers and global responsibilities, and their love for each other runs deep.

Fantastic Four is a New Kind of MCU Team

Previously, Marvel Studios has assembled groups such as The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, The New Avengers (Thunderbolts), and the Eternals. As pointed out by Moss-Bachrach, many of these teams initially resisted joining forces for a common cause, with the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy being particularly resistant in their early appearances. However, they eventually grew to become like families. Unlike them, the Fantastic Four were a family from the outset, gaining their powers concurrently and continuing to have Sunday dinners even after acquiring superpowers. They place great emphasis on spending quality time together, setting them apart from other teams.

In this new adventure titled “The Fantastic Four: Initial Leaps“, Ebon Moss-Bachrach portrays Ben Grimm, Reed Richards is brought to life by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby plays Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn embodies Johnny Storm, Ralph Ineson takes on Galactus, Julia Garner assumes Shalla-Bal’s character, and Paul Walter Hauser steps into the shoes of the antagonist Mole Man. WandaVision‘s director Matt Shakman helms the production, with Josh Friedman (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), Eric Pearson (Black Widow), and Jeff Kaplan (Bert and Arnie’s Guide to Friendship) contributing to the screenplay. There are whispers that Natasha Lyonne may appear in a secret role, while John Malkovich was initially slated for a villainous part, though unfortunately his character was omitted from the final cut of the movie.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps officially hits theaters on July 25th. Tickets are on sale now.
