Actor Ralph Ineson, who plays Galactus in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, wasn’t a fan of comic books when he got cast, but that changed once he took on the role. He admitted that Marvel provided him with reading materials when he was offered the part, but his true education came from his son. In an amusing comment made during a press roundtable with ComicBook, Ineson joked that his son acted as a “Victorian schoolmaster,” giving him an intense MCU boot camp for a month. This extensive knowledge of the character is sure to please fans, especially since Ineson confirmed he didn’t base his performance on the previous film adaptation. The movie will hit theaters on July 25th.
Ineson stated, “They initially confused me about Galactus’ arrival. After that, I read up on it, but I also have a 25-year-old son who is deeply engrossed in Marvel. As soon as I landed the role, he became like a Victorian schoolmaster and put me through an MCU training camp for a month. This included watching two movies a day, continuous comic reading, assignments, and more. So, yes, I was meticulously prepared when I got the part.
Ineson stated later on that he didn’t draw inspiration from the previous films, but he was captivated by stories about natural disasters, given Galactus’ immense power over the natural world. Imagine if a sneeze could trigger a tornado, or a cough could cause a tsunami – that’s the kind of power Galactus wields. He also wanted Galactus’ voice to resemble tumbling rocks.
The Marvel Cinatic Universe (MCU) faces significant anticipation to accurately portray Galactus in upcoming productions, given that fans were dissatisfied with the character’s abstract representation in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. As a crucial figure in Marvel’s expansive cosmic lore, Galactus is ideally suited for proper treatment within the Multiverse Saga. Preliminary indications suggest that the upcoming project titled First Steps has successfully captured the character, based on trailers and initial critical responses.
During the same press conference, Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, stated that initial concerns about a comic-accurate Galactus appearing “silly” were no longer valid. He explained that the success of the MCU lies in its adoption of distinctive visual styles from Marvel folklore, citing Loki’s iconic horned helmet as an example.
In discussing the early days of Thor, Feige recalls Loki’s distinctive horns, which were present during the filming of the first Thor (many years ago) and had also appeared in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer with Galactus. He felt that instead of trying to conceal them, they should be embraced due to their grandiose nature, and fortunately, they found an actor like Tom Hiddleston who could convincingly portray Loki with his oversized horns. Similarly, in Ralph (the context is not specified), the creators are choosing to embrace unique designs that have proven timeless over the years.
In a matter of mere days, we’ll have the opportunity to witness the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Galactus with our own eyes. The release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set for this coming Friday, July 29th.
