Fantastic Four’s New Galactus Reveal Offers The Best Look Yet At First Steps’ Villain

As we approach the release of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” in just a week, enthusiasts have been granted an exceptional sneak peek at Galactus. On Instagram, Hot Toys Collectibles unveiled a remarkable Jumbo Sofvi Figure from the upcoming movie, standing tall at 70cm and boasting six points of articulation. This figure marks the inception of the newly created Sofvi Masterpiece Series. The figure is further enhanced with LED lights in its eyes to create a captivating glowing effect. To emphasize Galactus’ colossal size, this collectible includes five miniature figures (The Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer), which can be attached to Galactus’ body to depict a battle focused on the Devourer of Worlds.

Hot Toys’ social media update mentions that specific regions will see a special release of the figure, including a unique “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” metal collector’s card enclosed within a display case. Scroll down to view images of the Galactus figure.

While Galactus takes center stage as the antagonist in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Marvel has hinted at Galactus’ presence through various trailers and ads. The official footage emphasizes Galactus’ immense size, but doesn’t provide a clear, detailed look at him yet. Instead, the promotional strategy primarily focuses on Galactus’ plot to destroy Earth-828, the Fantastic Four’s home planet. A recent advertisement revealed that Galactus is after baby Franklin Richards, creating an intriguing narrative conflict.

Although Marvel has been careful not to reveal much about Galactus in their footage, there have been glimpses of him in supplementary materials. For instance, a fuzzy picture of an official movie merchandise T-shirt was shared online in April, and Galactus’ head was used for the Fantastic Four: First Steps popcorn bucket that will be offered at AMC cinemas. These items give Marvel a way to spotlight Galactus while maintaining most of Ralph Ineson’s portrayal as the villain during the film’s debut.

Approximately two decades ago, Galactus was portrayed as the antagonist in “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” yet this depiction fell short compared to what we’re seeing in “First Steps.” Critics heavily criticized “Rise of the Silver Surfer” for representing Galactus as a planet-devouring cloud. However, in the Marvel Studios reboot, a more accurate representation from the comics will be seen on the big screen. The portrayal of Galactus in “First Steps” highlights how comic book adaptations have evolved over time. Kevin Feige views “First Steps” as an opportunity to give the Fantastic Four their due recognition on film; previously, he has discussed how the films from the 2000s were made during a different era, marked by a fear of being seen as silly. In contrast, “First Steps” is wholeheartedly embracing its source material with a story set in the 1960s that honors the characters’ rich history. The film’s Galactus appears as if he was taken directly from the comic books.

Ineson stated that he doesn’t consider Galactus as “wicked,” making the portrayal of this character in First Steps intriguing. Notably, Galactus was initially introduced with a somewhat tragic backstory in the comics. To sustain himself, Galactus consumes planets. If he were to ever stop, it would lead to his own demise, which is why he’s pursuing Franklin in First Steps (as Franklin possesses powers that enable him to create entire worlds out of nothing for Galactus to consume). If the character of Galactus can be developed as thoroughly in First Steps as his comic book counterpart, he could emerge as one of the most compelling villains within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
