Vanessa Kirby recently disclosed that a significant scene involving The Mole Man was omitted from The Fantastic Four: First Steps, but she is optimistic we’ll encounter him again in the future. During an interview with ComicBook prior to the film’s release on July 25th, Kirby and her co-stars discussed their preferred villains for potential sequels. While all had intriguing opinions, Kirby expressed her hope that Harvey Elder, also known as The Mole Man, will reappear. Paul Walter Hauser portrayed the character in First Steps, leading some viewers to anticipate a brief appearance before Galactus (Ralph Ineson) takes center stage. If Mole Man returns later, he may have more opportunities to shine.
In contrast to her fellow actors mentioning lesser-known adversaries they’d like to encounter in future Fantastic Four films, Kirby expressed a desire to revisit Mole Man. She explained, “We had an excellent scene together that unfortunately didn’t fit into the movie due to time constraints.” She further stated, “I am fixated on that scene and I believe there’s more potential for him in the future.
In the upcoming film First Steps, it’s uncertain yet what part Mole Man will have, but fans anticipate a subtle role in the narrative. Director Matt Shakman recently disclosed to USA Today that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) adaptation of Mole Man will be the ruler of an underground domain named Subterranea, populated by beings known as Moloids. He added that on-screen, Mole Man appears more like a labor union leader than a supervillain, suggesting he’s relatively sympathetic. His recent mention of the character this month suggests that Mole Man may not have been entirely removed from the movie; instead, it seems probable that they eliminated the scene that was particularly appealing to Kirby.
It’s understandable that a subplot needed to be cut for this film to maintain a runtime of two hours or less. However, as per Kirby, it seems we’re losing something significant. Fingers crossed the excised scene will become available on home media at some point. As for future installments, Kirby expresses her desire to see Psycho Man make an appearance, stating that he would create chaos and escalate things for Sue.
Kirby’s supporting characters also have some lesser-known choices for villains. Ebon Moss-Bachrach suggested Puppet Master as an exciting addition to the screen, commenting, “Puppet Master is a fascinating character that fits well within the Fantastic Four universe.” Joseph Quinn shared his enthusiasm for this choice, while Pedro Pascal expresses excitement about collaborating with other teams when the MCU eventually unites them all.
He continues to align himself with the X-Men, and it seems he’s mentioned Mystique more frequently than any other topic throughout his entire life.
Let’s hold off on making big plans for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as it remains to be seen where things are headed. However, this week, we can all look forward to the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps in cinemas starting July 25th.
