A recent leak from Ubisoft insider RogueTx suggests the next Far Cry game will feature a time limit as a central part of how you play. RogueTx shared a short audio clip, reportedly from Far Cry 7, which includes electronic music with a strong beat and, notably, a consistent ticking sound like a clock. This has led to speculation about a time-based mechanic in the game.
The leaker has shared more information about Far Cry 7, including what seems to be official artwork hinting at an Alaskan setting. They’ve also given us a first glimpse of one of the game’s main characters, though it’s a rough, early version of the model. According to the leaker, we might see Far Cry 7 revealed or released around late 2026.
This aligns with a 2024 rumor that Ubisoft delayed the release of Far Cry 7 (previously known as Blackbird) until 2026. The rumor also suggested the game would have a 24-hour time limit. Interestingly, the report also mentioned a separate Far Cry game set in Alaska – thought to be an extraction shooter called Maverick – would be released as a standalone title.
Ubisoft hasn’t said much about its plans for the next Far Cry game, and recent reports suggest development has been very difficult. It’s unclear if the team is now working on a single game instead of the two previously planned, or if both games are still in development.
In February, Ubisoft’s CEO, Yves Guillemot, announced that the company was working on two new Far Cry games. He described both projects as ‘very promising’ during an interview.
The most recent main installment in the Far Cry series is Far Cry 6, released in 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4 & 5, and Xbox One & Series X/S. The game stars Giancarlo Esposito as Antón Castillo, the ruthless dictator of the Caribbean island Yara. Players take on the role of Dani Rojas, a resistance fighter who initially tries to escape Yara but soon becomes involved in a revolution to overthrow Castillo and liberate the island.
The core Far Cry games usually drop you into remote, wild locations, cut off from the rest of the world, and challenge you to survive. This formula first became really successful with Far Cry 3 in 2012, and has been improved upon in later games like Far Cry 4, Far Cry 5, and spin-offs such as Far Cry Primal and Far Cry New Dawn.
