Farcaster founder teases Frames v2 ahead of full launch in 2025

As a researcher with years of experience in the blockchain and social media industry, I am genuinely intrigued by the updates to Farcaster’s Frames, particularly because I remember the significant impact the initial version had on the protocol’s user base. The 400% surge in daily active users within a week was nothing short of remarkable, making it one of the most talked-about events in this space last year.

According to Dan Romero, the creator of the decentralized social networking platform Farcaster based on Web3 technology, he has outlined a new development for Frames. Previously, this update significantly increased Farcaster’s user base by approximately 400% within a single week.

In a recent introduction of Frame v2’s specification on X, Romero stated that this new standard, which facilitates interactive apps, on-chain transactions, and user notifications, opens up possibilities for numerous innovative social applications.

Introduced in January 2024, Farcaster Frames have contributed significantly to the growing popularity of the Optimism-based layer-2 protocol. This is because they addressed some early challenges by allowing users to host mini-applications within the content of posts on the social media platform Warpcast.

After the debut of Frames, there was a significant surge in Farcaster’s usage, resulting in a fourfold rise in daily active users around early February. Yet, the activity levels have dropped slightly since that time.

Romero noted that the initial version of Frames had certain constraints, such as a limited capacity for user interactions, which made it challenging to construct bigger applications. Additionally, it struggled with generating images slowly, particularly for Frames. Furthermore, its “temporary” nature didn’t allow users to revisit them.

The update to Frames v2 is designed to address several problems by introducing a more sophisticated framing standard. This new standard offers increased flexibility for creating full-screen, in-app applications, immersive interactive experiences, on-chain transactions, and user alerts.

Romero explained that developers have the ability to construct various things that display within a web browser, and they can utilize a frame’s SDK to initiate functions such as saving the frame or prompting a blockchain transaction by simply making such requests.

In a separate post on November 26, Romero stated that we have significantly enhanced the dependability and speed for transactions and message signings on mobile devices by utilizing Mobile Wallet Protocol and Rainbow. He also linked to a Frames v2 developer preview.

Romero’s newly proposed Frames specifications are set to debut online and on mobile devices on November 27th. An enhanced edition featuring additional features will follow suit on December 6th. The final, fully stable version is anticipated to roll out in either January or February, as suggested by the full specification available on GitHub.

According to Dune Analytics, Farcaster boasts approximately 710,000 total users and an average of about half a million casts per day. Yet, over the last six months, there’s been a significant decrease in daily active users, down by roughly 28%.
