The final movie in The Fast and the Furious saga is officially moving forward. Universal Pictures announced on Friday that the last installment, currently untitled, will hit theaters on March 17, 2028. After being delayed for months, fans now have a confirmed release date.
The announcement came through Vin Diesel’s Instagram. The actor and producer shared a photo of himself with his late co-star, Paul Walker, from the original The Fast and the Furious film released in 2001.
Diesel acknowledged the journey hasn’t been simple, stating, ‘It’s ours.’ He described it as something that has shaped them and will be remembered forever, adding, ‘A legacy… lasts forever.’
It’s been three years since the last main Fast & Furious movie, Fast X, and fans are eagerly anticipating the eleventh film, now titled Fast Forever. This movie is expected to be the final chapter in the main series. While it was initially planned as a continuation of Fast X (originally called Fast X: Part Two), rumors suggest Fast Forever might start a completely new storyline with a different villain.
Fast Forever Sets March 2028 Release Date
The latest Fast X movie brought in new villains like Jason Momoa as Dante Reyes and Alan Ritchson as Aimes. If the next film, Fast Forever, decides to move the story in a different direction, it could wrap up these characters’ storylines by pairing Momoa’s Dante with Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs. Because Aimes is linked to Reyes, Alan Ritchson could also return for that movie.
I recently spoke with the actor about a potential return to the role, and he definitely seems keen! He told me he’s incredibly touched by the global love for the character – he called it ‘crazy’ in a good way, of course. However, he made it clear that until a script lands on his desk, a comeback isn’t in the cards – not anytime soon, anyway. He’s definitely leaving the door open, but it all hinges on having something compelling to work with.
Plans for Fast Forever have changed a lot since Fast X came out three years ago. Louis Leterrier is directing, and Christina Hodson (now working on a big project for DC Studios) and Oren Uziel are writing the script. The movie has been delayed several times, first by the recent Hollywood strikes, and then because of concerns about keeping the production budget below $200 million – the film could be canceled if costs go higher.
Sources say the studio is looking to trim the cast, potentially by giving some actors much less screen time. The ensemble cast of Fast X was extensive, featuring Vin Diesel, Alan Ritchson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Scott Eastwood, Daniela Melchior, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, Jason Statham, Jason Momoa, and Charlize Theron.
Fast Forever is set to open in theaters on March 17, 2028.
