A new free collaboration is available for Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake, featuring content from Silent Hill f. Players can now dress the characters Mio and Mayu Akamura in the Navy Sailor School Uniform and Fox Mask worn by Silent Hill f‘s main character, Shimizu Hinako. This collaboration was originally announced in January.
The remake of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly came out earlier this month for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. It’s a fresh take on the classic 2002 PlayStation 2 horror game, featuring improved graphics with detailed textures and better lighting, as well as gameplay adjustments to appeal to today’s gamers.
The story centers on sisters Mio and Mayu who chase a strange red butterfly and find themselves lost in the deserted village of Minakami. Once there, they become stuck in perpetual darkness, and Mio gets separated from Mayu. She must then journey to find her sister, encountering various spirits along the way. Her only protection is a peculiar camera called the Camera Obscura, which can trap these dangerous spirits.
As a fan, I’m really excited about how Koei Tecmo is updating the Camera Obscura for the remake! They’re saying it’s going to make both fighting and exploring way more immersive. We’ll still be taking pictures to deal with spirits, but now we’ll have more control with things like focus, zoom, and filters. Plus, they’re adding special shots that can really pack a punch in battle – sounds awesome!
Directors Makoto Shibata and Hidehiko Nakajima recently shared that the remake of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly is happening because fans asked for it. Following the release of updated versions of other games in the series – 2008’s Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse and 2014’s Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water – they received a lot of requests for a remake of Crimson Butterfly. According to the directors, those fan requests were the primary reason they decided to create this new version.
The team discussed the character designs for Mio and Mayu, emphasizing the need to maintain the original’s color scheme and visual style. They also wanted to ensure the characters’ outfits looked current and fashionable.
The costumes were created to stay true to the original game’s look and feel, but with a modern sensibility – we wanted them to feel wearable today. We focused heavily on details like textures and materials, and players can get a close look at everything in Photo Mode.
In a recent interview, Shibata shared more information about the development of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake. He talked about new technologies they’re using, such as PSSR, and explained some of the ways the gameplay will be updated in this remake.
