Koei Tecmo Publishing and Team NINJA Development Studio have unveiled the remake of the horror-adventure game, FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE, scheduled for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam) in early 2026.
Here is an overview of the game, via Koei Tecmo:
About
The completely revamped version of the second part of the FATAL FRAME sequence, initially launched in 2003, is known as FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly. This game belongs to the Japanese horror adventure genre and revolves around a pair of sisters who find themselves wandering through a deserted village inhabited by vengeful spirits. Using a Camera Obscura-a tool for capturing and locking away the supernatural-they engage in battles with ghosts, as the narrative unfolds.
Title underwent a thorough renovation, enhancing aspects from visuals, audio, and gameplay mechanics to controls. The fundamental Camera Obscura function, utilized for capturing and repelling spirits, is still integral, providing enhanced and immersive gameplay in exploration and combat. Also, the novel “Holding Hands with Mayu” feature has been incorporated, offering a deeply emotional connection between the sisters, allowing you to delve into their bond more intimately than before.
Story
Twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura visit a stream they remember from their childhood memories.
Soon, the region where Mio currently resides is expected to be flooded due to the construction of a dam. As Mio reflects, her elder sister Mayu follows a vibrant red butterfly, which seems to guide her towards an alleged settlement that has mysteriously vanished from all maps, leaving no trace behind.
The village is inhabited by vengeful ghosts, relentlessly pursuing the twin girls who escaped their ritual. It’s a place where perpetual darkness reigns.
As Mio searches for Mayu and attempts to leave the village, her journey unwittingly mirrors the traumatic events of the past.
Deep within the heart of the village, Mio discovers the secret behind the “prohibited ceremony, which should never be observed.
