CBS’s FBI universe has faced challenges recently, as fans were disappointed by the cancellations of FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International earlier this year. While a new spinoff, CIA, starring a former actor from Lucifer, offered a glimmer of hope, the show has hit another snag. Originally planned for a Fall 2025 debut, it has now lost its showrunner, adding to the delays.
Despite a lack of clear explanations for past delays, it appears the show has been facing production issues for some time. Warren Leight, known for his work on Law & Order: SVU, took over as showrunner in July, replacing David Hudgins. Now, Leight has also left the project, meaning the show will have had three different showrunners before a single episode is released.
Variety reports that Mike Weiss, the showrunner for FBI, is likely to take over and complete the first season of CIA. Production is currently paused while a replacement for the previous showrunner is found. However, the delay is expected to be short and shouldn’t affect the show’s planned midseason premiere.
These latest changes follow a string of surprising exits, including those of director and executive producer Eriq La Salle, and Michael Michele, who left the show soon after joining as a station chief.
‘CIA’ Can Still Be a Big Success for CBS

Hulu
Despite recent cancellations of several spin-off shows within the FBI universe, there’s still hope for the new CIA series. The show stars Morgan Ellis and Nick Gehlfuss (from Chicago Med) as an unlikely duo: Ellis plays a rule-breaking CIA officer, while Gehlfuss portrays a seasoned, by-the-book FBI agent who strongly believes in following the rules.
The new show follows two agents assigned to the CIA’s New York office. Despite their very different personalities, they must learn to work together to stop criminals who are threatening the country. This familiar premise – a mismatched pair working to save the day – has proven popular in many films and TV shows, and with experienced actors Ellis and Gehlfuss in the lead roles, this series looks promising.
Okay, so the future of the FBI universe is a little hazy. The original series did get renewed for three more seasons back in April, which is good news for fans. We won’t be getting quite as much FBI content in the next year as we have been, but it definitely seems like the show isn’t going anywhere just yet. There’s still some story left to tell, thankfully!
