Platinum Trophy #9: Marvel’s Spider-Man

Date Earned: 16th September 2018

Dopamine Index:

It really shows how much I enjoyed Marvel’s Spider-Man that I unlocked all of its trophies—the platinum—just ten days after the game came out. Looking back, I earned a new trophy nearly every day during those first ten days.

Like most people with a PS4 at the time, I was totally hooked on this.

Insomniac Games, famous for the Ratchet & Clank games, successfully reinvented a hugely popular fictional character, exceeding expectations with their latest creation.

Spider-Man has a long history with video games, starting all the way back in 1982. He’s been a popular character in gaming ever since, and there’s no shortage of games featuring the web-slinging hero.

I looked it up on Wikipedia, and here’s something interesting: after the first Spider-Man game came out in 1982, we didn’t get another one for five years – between 1984 and 1989. That’s a pretty long time, right?

When it comes to iconic characters, it’s hard to beat the superhero who swings through the city and climbs walls.

With so many games featuring him, everyone will naturally have a different pick for their favorite. For years, mine was Spider-Man 2 on the PS2 – it was a groundbreaking game based on the movie.

Marvel’s Spider-Man really built upon the foundations laid by a previous game, popularizing features we now expect. These include a sprawling, open-world New York City, realistic web-swinging where webs connect to buildings, and the ability to stumble upon crimes as you explore the city.

I remember how great the original framework was back in 2004, and Insomniac clearly understood that too. They just needed to update everything and bring it into the present, and honestly, they were already most of the way to creating an amazing Spider-Man game!

This installment offers a fresh perspective, diverging from established narratives. It cleverly blends familiar elements with unexpected twists, ensuring even longtime fans will be surprised and engaged.

As someone who just enjoys Spider-Man movies now and then, I really loved this new take on the whole universe. It was so refreshing and just really worked for me!

The game’s trophies hint at what you can expect: a familiar structure, but a really fun experience overall.

To fully complete the game, you need to finish everything – all side missions, collect every suit, and liberate every district in Manhattan.

Okay, so this game isn’t reinventing the wheel, but honestly, it’s just a blast! It’s exactly what you’d expect from a huge, over-the-top action movie – and it nails it. It’s not the most original game out there, but it’s seriously, really fun to play.

Cheers, Marvel’s Spider-Man.

Just a heads-up for my trophy hunters! This is the first time I’m actually counting two platinums with one playthrough of Going Platinum – the original Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered which popped automatically. I’m not gonna write a separate guide for the Remastered version since it’s pretty much the same game, but I wanted to let you all know how it worked for me.
