Feature: Our PS5 Predictions for 2025 – Results Revealed

With 2025 ending, let’s look back at the past year and, more importantly, see how accurate our predictions from January turned out to be – who got it right, and who didn’t.

Every year, our team likes to predict what will happen in the gaming world. And, being competitive gamers, we’ve turned it into a friendly contest. We’ll be tracking who makes the most accurate predictions – and who misses the mark!

Let’s take a look at how we all got on.

Aaron Bayne, Video Producer

“Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet gameplay is revealed, plus a 2026 release window”

Considering Sony’s usual release schedule, it’s understandable why Aaron expected to see more of the Intergalactic game in 2025. However, it looks like the game will be released later than anticipated. With PlayStation Studios already planning several games for 2026, Intergalactic is now likely to come out in 2027.

“PS Portal will get an OLED version”

A straightforward one, this — it’s a negative. Sorry, Aaron.

Sony has given the PS Portal a good amount of attention this year, adding several useful features and offering it in different colors. However, they didn’t release a version with an OLED screen.

“Opinion on the PS5 Pro will shift as more games benefit from it”

Determining overall sentiment towards the PS5 Pro is tricky, as opinions vary. However, currently, more people seem to view it negatively than positively. While Aaron predicted opinions would improve, several major game releases haven’t fully utilized the Pro’s capabilities, meaning his prediction unfortunately proved incorrect.

“PlayStation enters an unprecedented new golden age”

It’s difficult to say for sure how accurate this prediction is, but the idea is that the PlayStation 5 will continue to sell well because of its strong game selection and the fact that many Xbox games are also available on other platforms. While it’s hard to be precise, the PS5 had a very successful 2025 with some fantastic exclusive games, so let’s give Khayl a small amount of credit – half a point.

“Judas is released in Q1 2025, and it’s the true successor to BioShock”

That’s not quite right, Khayl! We’re still waiting for news on Judas, the upcoming game from Ken Levine and Ghost Story Games. Everyone is eager to see what the creators of BioShock do next, but it’s likely to be released no earlier than 2026, and it remains to be seen if it will live up to the BioShock legacy.

“Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is a breakout success for the series”

Sadly, things didn’t quite work out as Khayl, a fan of history and strategy games, had hoped. While critics generally liked the game, players had a very divided reaction, with many disappointed by its changes and other problems. We don’t have complete sales figures, but the head of 2K Games indicated that initial sales were slow, meaning it didn’t become the big hit Khayl was expecting.

“Resident Evil 9 is announced for a 2026 launch”

Liam was spot-on with his initial prediction! Resident Evil Requiem was officially announced in 2025, and it’s set to release on February 27th, 2026. You couldn’t ask for a more accurate forecast!

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach has received the best Metacritic score of any PlayStation 5 game released in 2024.

The prediction that DS2 would be a top game nearly came true. However, 2025 saw an exceptional number of high-quality releases. Several games, including Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Hollow Knight: Silksong, and Split Fiction, ultimately received better reviews (Metascores) than the DS2 sequel, despite it being a very good game.

“Hollow Knight: Silksong releases”

Liam made a surprisingly accurate prediction! After years of anticipation, Silksong was finally released in the late summer of 2025. The game was so popular that it caused temporary outages on almost every online store where it was sold.

“Starfield comes to PS5 as some kind of complete edition later in the year”

Unfortunately, the prediction that Starfield would be on PlayStation 5 by 2025 didn’t pan out. Microsoft did release several of its own games on PS5 this year, but Starfield wasn’t one of them. We still anticipate it will eventually arrive, but it looks like Rob jumped the gun with this forecast.

“Jin Sakai will be playable in Ghost of Yotei (through a flashback sequence)”

Rob’s story idea for Ghost of Yotei, featuring Jin Sakai, won’t be happening. Jin Sakai isn’t a playable character in the game, which is a shame – it would have been great to see!

Rob also made a minor prediction about the Sakai family katana, and surprisingly, it was correct! So, we’ll give him half a point – it’s the holiday season, after all.

“The Final Fantasy 9 remake is revealed, built on Unreal Engine”

Honestly, I was really hoping Rob’s latest prediction would be good news, but it’s a no-go. It looks like we’re still waiting for a Final Fantasy 9 remake, which is a bummer. We did get some Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 talk, and I’m thrilled Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles finally arrived, but I’m still dreaming of seeing Zidane and the crew get a modern update. I’m really hoping it happens someday!

“Sony will announce a game playable on PS5, PC, and mobile”

Many expected Sony to announce games playable on PlayStation 5, PC, and mobile devices, but that hasn’t happened yet. While Sony did announce mobile games for 2025, they aren’t cross-platform. It seemed likely, but it didn’t materialize, so for now, it’s a prediction that hasn’t come true.

“GTA 6 will have a modular multiplayer map allowing Rockstar to change parts of the city”

We still don’t have much new information about GTA 6 – it’s the same situation as when Sammy first made his predictions. However, his idea about the game having a modular map seems likely, especially considering it will probably include ongoing live service features. Sadly, we’re still at least a year away from playing it, and there’s even a chance it could be delayed further. Hopefully, it won’t be!

“Microsoft becomes the biggest publisher on PS5 by far”

This prediction has largely proven correct. Xbox is increasingly releasing its games on platforms beyond its own, and given the size of Microsoft’s gaming business, many of the top-selling games on PlayStation 5 in 2025 have actually been published by Microsoft. Just five years ago, this would have seemed impossible, but Sony’s main rival has now become a major source of games for them.

“We’ll spy our first glimpse of Project 007 this year”

We finally got a look at the new James Bond game, officially titled 007 First Light! We’ve seen quite a bit of it so far, including the first trailer, a dedicated presentation at a State of Play event, and gameplay footage at various shows throughout 2025.

“Team Asobi isn’t quite done with Astro Bot just yet”

Stephen’s accurate prediction about Astro Bot proved to be correct. The game received several free downloadable content levels throughout the year, which included the new ‘Special Bots’ he anticipated. It appears Team Asobi has now finished updating Astro Bot, and they definitely delivered on this one!

Electronic Arts is planning to reveal a new arcade-style racing game, which will be either a completely new Burnout title or a remastered version of a classic Need for Speed game.

It’s disappointing that EA didn’t announce a new Burnout, Need for Speed, or any other arcade-style racing game. Stephen did some great work trying to find information, but the company didn’t reveal anything new. While EA might be working on one secretly, nothing was announced for 2025.

We have a tie this year! Both Liam and Stephen correctly predicted the same number of outcomes, earning two points each. Congratulations to both of you – enjoy a mince pie and some Quality Street as a reward!

We’ll be sharing our new predictions for 2026 soon, so stay tuned! In the meantime, let us know what you think of our previous predictions – the hits and misses – in the comments below.
