The Game Awards are almost here, and you can almost certainly expect Geoff Keighley to offer his usual optimistic comments about the video game industry.
Watching the show is always chaotic, even though it starts incredibly late – 12:30 AM in the UK! By the time it’s over, we’re exhausted, a little crazy, and wondering why we agree to do this with Geoff every year.
Honestly, it’s really enjoyable to watch these events live – seeing which development teams get recognized and finding out about the new game announcements that will have everyone talking for months to come.
After watching The Game Awards many times, we think we have a pretty good idea of what will happen. If we predict something correctly, consider us owed a custard cream!
Geoff Keighley Humblebrags About Playing Something Early At Least Twice
Geoff Keighley is a highly influential figure in the gaming industry, and he definitely lets people know it. During his presentations, he consistently highlights that he’s already had a chance to play the games he’s showcasing – often mentioning it multiple times. It’s a subtle way of asserting his position and reminding everyone of his access and influence.
Geoff’s Shoes Will Be Predominantly Blue
Whenever Geoff appears on stage, it’s a safe bet he’ll be wearing eye-catching shoes. He always shows up in bold footwear, likely as a way to make a statement and maybe even defend himself from anyone who tries to interrupt the show. It’s hard to guess what color he’ll choose, but we’re predicting blue, and we’re sticking with that guess.
The Muppets Return, and This Time It’s Rowlf
For several years, The Muppets have popped up in some way at The Game Awards. Given how much Geoff Keighley seems to love puppets – he practically looks like one himself! – it’s clear he’s a big fan of those beloved characters.
This year, we’re planning to feature Rowlf the dog playing the piano in the corner of the stage. Throughout the show, we’ll occasionally cut to him for a short, funny musical performance. We think it’s a really fun idea, even if it doesn’t quite work out.
Someone Will Make a ‘Wrap It Up’ Joke Even Though That Was Two Years Ago
The Game Awards isn’t perfect, but one of its most criticized moments was telling people to keep their acceptance speeches brief. While Christopher Judge’s incredibly long speech the previous year definitely contributed to this, Geoff Keighley also faced criticism for the instruction, and it’s likely people will continue to joke about it at this year’s show.
That Whole Statue Thing Will Be a Big Disappointment
Geoff created a buzz by placing a strange statue in the Mojave Desert, and fans have been frantically trying to figure out what it means. People have guessed it’s related to games like God of War, The Elder Scrolls, or even the long-awaited Half-Life 3, but most of the popular ideas have already been proven wrong.
We believe this is either the start of a brand new game series, or a complicated way to announce something fairly simple, like an expansion to The Elder Scrolls Online. This kind of publicity is unusual, and it sometimes suggests that whatever’s being promoted isn’t actually very exciting.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Will Win Several Awards, Including GOTY, and the Support Studios That Helped Make It Won’t Get a Mention
Everyone expects Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to win big at this year’s Game Awards, and the story behind its success is a great one. The game was created by a small team of just 30 people, and host Geoff Keighley will likely highlight how this relatively unknown studio made something truly unique that both critics and players loved.
This game’s inspiring story of being made against the odds is so captivating that it’s likely to overshadow the contributions of the many external developers who were essential to its creation. While the game credits hundreds of contractors and teams who provided crucial support – including animation, testing, translation, and more – we suspect they won’t receive the same recognition as the core team, despite their vital role in getting the game to where it is today. It’s a fantastic game, and everyone involved deserves appreciation, but it feels like many of the supporting developers might be overlooked.
Tarantino, Thurman, or Both
Geoff Keighley, the host of The Game Awards, clearly loves bringing out big celebrities – almost as much as he loves the Muppets! Every year, we see famous faces like Al Pacino, Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dogg, and Timothée Chalamet appear on stage to awkwardly talk about video games, and this year will be no different.
Fortnite recently featured a new Kill Bill experience with Quentin Tarantino and Uma Thurman, and it would be great to see them present an award and promote both the in-game ‘Lost Chapter’ and the Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair release. Geoff Keighley would be thrilled to introduce them – you can just imagine how excited he’d be!
