Movie fans will be excited to know that a selection of the action star’s most popular films will be available to stream for free starting February 1st.
Starting February 1st, Tubi is adding all three Taken movies starring Liam Neeson, along with his 2018 film The Commuter. These join a larger group of action-packed titles coming to the service, including The Beekeeper with Jason Statham, White House Down featuring Channing Tatum, and Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant. This gives fans a free opportunity to watch some of Neeson’s most memorable performances.
Released in 2008, Taken launched a successful film series. Created by Luc Besson, who also made The Fifth Element, the films star Liam Neeson as Bryan Mills, a former CIA agent. The first Taken movie follows Mills as he desperately searches for his teenage daughter and her friend after they are kidnapped while on vacation in France. Despite its popularity, the film initially received mixed reviews and currently holds a 60% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite mixed critical reception, the film Taken was a major success with moviegoers. It boasts an 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 250,000 reviews, and earned $226 million at the box office on a $25 million budget. This success led to a franchise, which is now expanding to the streaming service Tubi.
The sequel, Taken 2, released in 2012, featured Neeson’s character and his ex-wife being kidnapped by someone seeking revenge for his death in the first film, where Neeson saved his daughter. The film received poor reviews from critics (only 22% approval on Rotten Tomatoes) and lukewarm reception from audiences (52% from over 100,000 reviews). Despite this, Taken 2 was a box office success, earning over $375 million globally – making it the most profitable film in the Taken series.
By 2015, with the release of Taken 3, it was clear the Taken series was struggling to regain the excitement of the first movie. This third installment, where Bryan Mills is wrongly accused of murder and fights to prove his innocence, received largely negative reviews, with many calling it predictable and lacking originality. While critics only gave it a 13% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (with audiences at 43%), it still earned an impressive $326 million at the box office – more than the original Taken film.
The Commuter is an Underrated Gem with an Impressive Liam Neeson Performance
Although the later Taken movies weren’t popular with critics, another Liam Neeson thriller is now available on Tubi. Released in 2018, The Commuter stars Neeson and Vera Farmiga, and follows a man drawn into a dangerous murder plot after a chance encounter with a mysterious woman on his train ride home. He must race against time to uncover her identity and solve a deadly puzzle, with his life on the line.
While reviews for The Commuter were mixed, with a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, most critics praised Liam Neeson’s performance. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film benefits from a strong cast, making it an enjoyable action thriller, especially for a matinee or rental, though perhaps not worth a full-price ticket.
Liam Neeson’s Taken trilogy and The Commuter are now streaming for free on Tubi.
