Felicia Day reveals The Guild movie update, as musical version lands in London

Felicia Day‘s popular web series, The Guild, is becoming a musical and will be performed on stage in London for a limited, one-week run. Plus, Day is also working on a feature film based on the series!

In our recent Arcade Hang interview, we spoke with Day about how “The Guild” unexpectedly became a musical, and also chatted with her co-star, Anjali Bhimani, about the show.

Day described the musical, The Guild, as incredibly exciting in a recent interview. You can watch the full interview in the video above or on YouTube.

Day explained that she relies on her instincts when working. About six years ago, two playwrights she met in a workshop asked if they could get the rights to a song they’d written for the show ‘The Guild’ as part of their class.

I asked to hear the song because I’d grown up with musicals. Being home-schooled, I got into acting through musical theater productions all over the Southeast—I even played Orphan Number Seven! I was really excited about their music, and after listening, I immediately agreed to participate.

I agreed to let them develop the project, and I quickly became more involved, eventually becoming a producer. I started working with a talented group of New York actors, and it’s been a long process. We recently had a reading in Los Angeles, and I was able to bring on Dean Johnson, a highly respected director from London, to help us move forward.

Tickets are selling fast for The Guild: The Musical’s performances in London this week! There are only a few remaining, and you can purchase them now on The Other Palace website. The show runs from Tuesday to Thursday and is currently a work in progress.

Day described how the musical draws heavily from the first and second seasons, and resolves some plot points that he found surprisingly intense.

Looking back at my early work, I realize I wouldn’t make those same jokes today. It definitely shows its age in some ways. It’s good to have the chance to revisit it with a fresh perspective, both through my own growth and with someone else leading the process.

That might not feel real to me personally. What does feel real is being part of The Guild. It connects all of us – people from all walks of life, of different ages and with different perspectives – through a shared passion.

After so many years, what’s it been like for Day to reprise her role as Codex, also known as Cyd, and reflect on that period of her life?

Day shared that she struggled with severe anxiety, which ultimately led her to create The Guild. She explained that before the show, she was an actor who auditioned for many television series, but wasn’t consistently landing roles.

I always felt like the backup option, and the pressure would get to me. People expected me to fail, and I did, every time. Looking back, I realize this was due to an anxiety disorder that wasn’t recognized at the time, which completely overwhelmed me.

It’s been a really incredible journey of self-discovery and learning to be kinder to myself. Surprisingly, I think dealing with my anxiety actually helped me achieve a lot – especially with creating The Guild, which I built from absolutely nothing.

I built the website and added a PayPal button I created to help finance the second season. This was all done before platforms like Kickstarter existed.

It was really difficult for creators in the past. If I wanted to make something, I had to find everything myself, and it was always a messy, complicated process that took a lot of effort.

Day explained her approach to acting, saying she focuses on enjoying the process. She described playing the character Codex as feeling natural, like revisiting a familiar role of someone who faced many challenges.

The show centers around someone struggling and trying to create meaningful connections with others. It explores how she uses the internet to build those relationships and improve her life.

Day explained that the heart of the story lies in the relationships between the characters and how they use games to build connections with each other, rather than isolate themselves.

Many people, especially those from older generations, don’t fully grasp how beneficial gaming can be. One of the great things about the gaming community is that it allows people to connect with each other, fostering genuine human connection.

And with this run of London shows only lasting a brief week, what’s next after this?

We’re launching a crowdfunding campaign this summer to make the movie. The script is finished, and I’m already in the planning stages. I’m hoping we can successfully raise the funds, film the movie, and release the play all around the same time.

We’ll keep you updated with any news about the movie! Also, if you have some free time this week, you can get tickets for The Guild: The Musical on The Other Palace’s website.
