Ferocious is looking like a standout indie shooter – a fast-paced, action-packed first-person game featuring dinosaurs. It’s not just about surviving; it also has a surprisingly strong story. Unlike many open-world survival games, Ferocious features carefully designed levels, clear goals, and exciting, memorable moments while still letting you play how you want. Developed by a new indie team and launching soon, here are 15 things you should know before diving into this ambitious dinosaur island adventure.
Premise
Ferocious is a game where you’re stranded on a dinosaur-filled island – a familiar idea, but with a clever approach. Instead of a sprawling, open-ended survival game, Ferocious focuses on a strong story and takes you through a more guided experience. The mystery of your missing brother is central to the game’s captivating world, adding an emotional layer to the dinosaur adventure. That sounds fantastic!
Dinosaurs, Mercenary Gangs, and Mechas, Oh My
While the diverse dinosaurs are a major draw in this game, they aren’t the only danger you’ll encounter on the island. It’s not as deserted as it seems; mercenaries and soldiers with drones are also present. You’ll find yourself switching between fleeing massive dinosaurs and taking cover during intense firefights with paramilitary forces – and even battling on foot with giant mechs!
Controlling Dinos To Attack Opponents

Okay, so here’s the cool part: you can actually turn the tables on your hunters using the dinosaurs themselves! There’s this device that lets you control certain dinos, and you can basically send them after the people chasing you. But it’s not just about fighting! Some dinos can sniff out useful items scattered around and bring them back – which really changes how you approach a fight. And if you come across a blocked path or a locked door? Just send in a controlled dino – problem solved!
A Variety of Species
I’m really excited about the dinosaurs in Ferocious! There’s such a variety – you’ll see some peacefully grazing, and others that are immediately ready to attack. It’s not always easy to control them, and honestly, some are practically unbeatable! What I love is that the developers aren’t aiming for total realism with the designs. They’re going for dinosaurs as we imagine them, prioritizing cool and fun over scientific accuracy. So, expect some really creative and wild-looking dinos – perfect for a video game!
Not Open World

Okay, so the dinosaurs and mechs aren’t just wandering around completely on their own, but it’s not a massive, totally open world either. The island is broken up into about six different areas – pretty open zones, but they do have boundaries. Honestly, the main story missions are a little more straightforward than I thought they’d be for a ‘stranded on an island’ game. It reminds me a lot of the first Far Cry and Crysis – you get freedom to explore, but there’s still a clear path to follow with the main objectives. It’s a cool mix!
Five Unique Biomes
So far, explorers have discovered five different areas on the dinosaur island. You’ll start on the coast, a beginner-friendly zone with hidden bays and unpredictable weather. Beyond that, you’ll find a complex network of canyons, low-lying lands, wide-open plains, and a dense jungle. Each area is designed to offer a fresh and unique gameplay experience.
Obstacles and Terrain

The game developers are adding variety to gameplay with obstacles and interactive environments. For example, players will encounter dinosaurs that can help unlock new areas, and will need to destroy things like dense vines to progress. Expect to find plenty of puzzles that require you to manipulate the environment as you explore the island.
Semi-Destructible Environments
The game world isn’t static – things break and change during combat. Grass can burn, and flimsy cover won’t last long. The developers focused on making the environment feel alive and reactive, though they had to limit how much could be destroyed due to budget constraints. To add to this sense of a living world, the island will experience rain, strong winds, and a full day-night cycle. However, the weather won’t affect your character’s health or require you to find shelter.
Environmental Storytelling
Honestly, the world itself is a huge part of what’s drawing me in. The developers really focused on making this island feel like it has a history, like people actually lived here before I arrived. They’re promising tons of abandoned camps and ruins of old civilizations to explore. And apparently, there are hidden journal entries scattered everywhere, little clues to piece together what happened. It’s not just about the main quest; it feels like there’s a real story hidden in the environment, and I can’t wait to uncover it.
Weapons and Combat

The game will launch with 12 different weapons. These guns are based on real-world historical designs, so players familiar with first-person shooters will likely recognize them. The selection includes common pistols like the 9mm, as well as more powerful options like the Desert Eagle. Players can also use submachine guns (like the MP5), AK rifles, Remington shotguns, sniper rifles, and even a flamethrower. Beyond firearms, the game features throwable explosives like grenades and melee weapons such as knives, all useful for dealing with the island’s dangerous inhabitants.
Upgrades
Guns in Ferocious wear down with use and can even malfunction, so keeping an eye on their durability is important. Upgrading your weapons is a key part of the game. While stealth isn’t a focus, you can customize your guns with attachments like laser sights, folding stocks, and scopes. Silencers won’t be available.
Single-Player

Because Ferocious doesn’t have any multiplayer features, the developers didn’t need to worry about balancing the game for competitive play. They intentionally made this choice to fully concentrate on creating a strong story-focused first-person shooter campaign, while also adding some elements of open-world survival.
Indie Studio
The development team is small but talented – an indie group of just a few developers. They’ve added a veteran from the Far Cry series and designers with experience in film and theme parks, which is helping them create a unique and compelling look and feel for the game’s island setting.
Runs on Unity
I was surprised to learn the game was made in Unity. Considering the realistic weather and destructible environments, it looks like a high-budget, top-tier game, which is really impressive given the small team and limited resources they had.
PC Requirements
Running Ferocious doesn’t require a top-of-the-line computer, but you’ll need a decent one to experience it fully. The minimum requirements are pretty standard: an older Intel i5 (or comparable AMD processor), 12 GB of RAM, and a GTX 1060 or RX 580 – graphics cards many PC gamers likely already own. To really maximize the visuals – things like realistic weather, detailed environments, and destructible objects – you’ll want a more powerful setup with an i7 or Ryzen 5 3600 processor and an RTX 2060 or RX 5600 graphics card. Thankfully, the game doesn’t take up much storage space, only around 25 GB, which is relatively small for a game with such impressive graphics.
We don’t know how much Ferocious will cost, but given it’s an independent game, it likely won’t be $69. This first-person shooter adventure, set on a dinosaur island, comes out on December 4th and will initially only be available on PC – there are no plans for console versions right now.
