Final Destination Bloodlines Directors Reveal Shocking Deaths and Tony Todd’s Emotional Goodbye

Originally intended to premiere exclusively on streaming platforms, the movie “Final Destination Bloodlines” made a surprise appearance in cinemas earlier this year, demonstrating that the death-themed franchise is far from over. With mostly positive critic responses, the reboot/sequel raked in an impressive $285 million at the box office and sparked a renewed fervor among fans. A few months down the line, “Final Destination Bloodlines” can now be bought or rented on-demand services such as Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango Now — click here to access it. The film will also receive a full physical release on July 22nd, with 4K and SteelBook editions available for pre-order.

Following the unveiling of this home edition, ComicBook had a chat with the directors of Bloodlines, Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, discussing some of the film’s most startling demises, future directions for the series, and bidding farewell to the legendary Tony Todd.

Killing Your Darlings

The “Final Destination” series is known for devising ingenious methods to eliminate its characters, and “Bloodlines” was particularly brimming with unexpected lethal devices. Despite the inevitability of death in these films, it was still a shock to see certain characters meet their untimely end, especially Erik, who quickly won over fans and is now often regarded as one of the most memorable characters in the entire series.

Richard Harmon’s captivating portrayal of the tattoo artist was undoubtedly the most notable newcomer from the series “Bloodlines“. The plot of the movie subtly crafted a protective sphere around this character, enabling potential expansion in future installments. However, as the movie reminds us, meddling with Death never goes unpunished. Unfortunately, Erik experiences these deadly repercussions personally.

During our conversation with the directors of Bloodlines, we enquired about Erik’s destiny within the movie, and whether or not his final outcome had been fixed from the start.

Lipovsky stated that the main challenge as a filmmaker is finding an unpredictable way to tell a story. To accomplish this, they aimed to surprise the audience with the deaths in the movie by keeping them guessing about what would happen next. This can be difficult because when you reveal the sequence of events to the cast and crew, it becomes predictable for the audience.

In many ways, the events involving Erik are designed to keep you guessing about his fate. We first make you believe he’s in grave danger, then reassure you he’s safe, only to later reveal he’s not. This unpredictability keeps you on the edge of your seat, which is thrilling for the audience, especially when shared in a communal theater setting. This was our intention in crafting each scene and structuring the movie as a whole.

In Bloodlines, the filmmakers emphasized Erik’s unpredictability as a key strength, which they also applied to other family members. Their aim was to create characters that felt genuine and authentic, yet simultaneously conveyed the message that any character could be in danger.

According to Stein, he strives to create characters that seem authentic and unforeseeable. When returning to franchises such as this one, it’s frequently like starting anew with a wide range of possibilities, rather than just continuing the existing narrative.

The Future of Final Destination

The core concept underlying “Bloodlines” is pervasive, shaping every aspect, even the climactic scene that effectively disbands its diverse cast – no offense intended. Ultimately, death claims victory in this story, adding an exhilarating note to the film but posing challenges for potential franchise continuation.

It’s fortunate that Lipovsky and Stein focused more on creating a single strong film rather than a series, but they understand that more installments of the Final Destination franchise could still be in the works. They recognize there are numerous methods to spin fresh tales within this universe.

In Stein’s words, “The movie Final Destination has demonstrated an everlasting relevance and indeed, it has. The unique format of the film is so entertaining that it can adapt to various settings, including modern films or even period pieces, which might not have been initially expected. In this instance, it centers around a family.

One amusing article I came across on Reddit proposed a scenario where NASA deflects an asteroid that could’ve wiped out our entire planet. However, instead of saving us, this action unintentionally doomed every human alive. I couldn’t help but imagine how an Armageddon-like movie directed by Roland Emmerich would portray such an event.

Tony Todd’s Final Scene

In a sad turn of events, Tony Todd, a renowned figure in the industry, lost his life to stomach cancer last November. Prior to this, he had been given a terminal diagnosis and still chose to join the cast of Bloodlines a year prior. This film serves as his final leading role on the big screen, and his scene is an emotional farewell that poignantly addresses the fleeting nature of life and cherishing every moment we’re given.

Mr. Bludworth advises that we should make the most of our remaining moments, suggesting we seize each second, for life is valuable. He adds a note of good fortune as he leaves.

The script’s depiction took into account Todd’s illness, but the closing remarks were personally expressed by the actor, addressing fans who have appreciated his performances over a long period of time.

During the creation of the movie, we were aware that he had been unwell for quite some time, raising doubts about his ability or desire to join us. However, he consistently reached out, expressing a strong wish to be included in the film. He was thrilled about being part of it, Stein stated. Despite his physical illness, he radiated immense emotional joy and enthusiasm to be on set. Acting, performing, and being with his co-stars were passions he never lost. His presence might have been visibly weaker than before, but his spirit was deeply connected and vibrant. In a sense, he embodied the character he portrayed, making it a moving experience to work with him.

The written scene concluded with him stating, “I’m stepping down. I want to make the most of my remaining time.” He then departed, but it was clear that a proper farewell to the fans was necessary, as he added on.

We inquired if he would feel at ease expressing himself genuinely and freely, addressing the audience directly about his thoughts on life and death. After having extensive discussions with him, the words he spoke at the doorway were indeed his own, pouring out sincerely from his heart. This is why viewers find it deeply moving when they watch the movie, as his emotional depth shines through in his eyes.

You can now purchase or rent ‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’ digitally. The physical versions of the film in 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD), Blu-ray, and DVD will be available for sale starting from the 22nd of July.
