‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’ Directors Tapped To Direct ‘Metal Gear Solid’ Film

The directors of Final Destination: Bloodlines, Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, will be directing a movie based on the popular video game Metal Gear Solid. According to Deadline, they’ve signed a deal with Sony Pictures to direct the film as part of a larger agreement. Avi Arad, a former Marvel producer, and his son Ari Arad will produce the movie. This marks Avi Arad’s second video game adaptation with Sony, following the upcoming The Legend of Zelda film.

First released in 1987, Metal Gear Solid is a groundbreaking stealth game series. Most games follow Solid Snake as he investigates and destroys the Metal Gears – powerful, walking military bases. The series is known for popularizing stealth gameplay and influencing many other games with its cinematic style. As of December 2025, over 65.5 million copies of Metal Gear games have been sold worldwide. Solid Snake has become a legendary video game character, even appearing in games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Fortnite.

I’ve been following the news about a Metal Gear Solid movie for what feels like forever – ever since Hideo Kojima first mentioned it way back in 2006! It’s been a real rollercoaster, with so many changes. For a while, it looked like things were really coming together when Jordan Vogt-Roberts, the director of Kong: Skull Island, signed on. I was so excited when I heard Oscar Isaac was going to play Solid Snake, but unfortunately, that fell through. Now, with Lipovsky and Stein taking the reins, it seems Jordan Vogt-Roberts has moved on too. It’s frustrating to see so many shifts, but I’m still hoping we’ll eventually get a fantastic Metal Gear Solid film!

Filmmakers Lipovsky and Stein have started their own production company called Wonderlab. They’re partnering with Sony Pictures to develop films they’ll direct, and also to produce projects for other directors. Currently, they’re looking for executives to help run the company, which will focus on creating character-focused, commercially viable genre films. Lipovsky and Stein first gained attention as contestants on Steven Spielberg’s reality competition show, On the Lot, nearly 20 years ago. Beyond their recent film Final Destination: Bloodlines, they previously directed the 2018 sci-fi thriller Freaks and the 2019 Disney Channel live-action adaptation of the animated series Kim Possible.

Sanford Panitch, President of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group, announced a first-look deal with Lipovsky and Stein, stating in a press release:

Zach and Adam are incredibly talented directors and producers who consistently deliver exciting and visually stunning stories. We’re thrilled to be working with them across all of our film divisions and are proud to welcome them to Sony.
